Saw this coming home today.
The Court House in Winchester, KY got hit by lightning about 2 weeks ago. Est. 100k $ in damage IIRC. The clock ( all 4 faces are driven off the same shaft) is a goner.
When we did the Lexington Court house a few months ago, we toted scaffold all day, just to do a 1/2 hour fix.
I really wish I had one of these babies…..

Couple years ago I was hired to measure a crumbling masonry cap on the front wall and roof of the local masonic lodge. That was exactly the method I used, I hired a local crane with a basket to lift me up so I could get around the whole thing without ladders, staging or whatever. The wall cap started at about 35' up and the roof pitch is a bit over 12/12, so walking up a ladder and then the roof (slate) wouldn't have worked. It took about three hours, cost $375, and was worth every dime. We did it on a Sunday morning at 6 am, and the crane parked in the drive-through lane of the next-door bank so nobody was inconvenienced.
I could have used one of those telescopic lifts, but nobody in town had one.
Whoa, what stops it from swaying in the breeze, or moving when you need to lean into your work?
Crane guy here has a basket like that he lifts guys in, only not so high, and maybe not near the power lines.
I was at a red light and the power lines were at street level..the crane was on a closed street and I couldn't get a good pic of the lower part. I'd say it was a healthy 130' arm.
Yup, the dude in the basket was tied off to the building I think.
We scaffolded up to the missing CU here.

Ive snadblsted and spray painted in cranes like that quite a bit .
In my younger days I was an industrial union painter. Had a Tshirt that said Industrial Painters Work High.

I'll have a word with seeyou and see what we can do for you. I wield great power now that he has entered my domain.
Cool..our 40' lift is always missing it by just THAT much..(G)

You know, if you want to spend your days at the top of a crane that tall, more power to ya.
I like to keep my feet a lot closer to the ground. Its hurts a lot less when ya hit the ground.
80-90% of my day is above the ground. You get used to it.
It just is really hard ( now I know, damm near impossible) to carry much climbing a scaffold...I DID get a bundle of shingles up about a yr ago, when our ladder got stolen. That hurt.

I don't want to get used to it.
When I was much younger, being up high didn't bother me a bit. I liked being the guy up high.
But when I was 29, I fell off scaffolding, and ended up in the hospital with a broken back. I was out of work for a year.
I know it's psychological, but I much prefer staying near the ground now. I do go up on ladders and roofs some, but I'm never really comfortable doing it anymore.
from what sea ewe says, you would lose it the first week....I have no comment...
As of yesterday am , he said we need to rent another boom lift..he owns ours, but with 3 crews, we are all fighting over it.
And I only lost it one time (G)

LOL..Dale wanted to use it for a side job, but Gman said it don't travel on the road very well..the torque hubs will cook.
I need it for a few days here at Mi Casa...tree trimming and siding/soffit. But the haul fee is 100. each way, I may rent one local.

When I was younger I logged in the PNW for several years. One time the back-line (1 1/2" metal rope) on the yarder jumped the sheave and got stuck between it and the block. I got volunteered to get haywired up to the top of the tower (120') with a 4lb. hammer to beat the line back into place. Our landing was about an unobstructed mile from the mouth of the Columbia River. What a view! I'll never forget it, but must admit it was good to be back on terra firma!
not a word to osha, ok?
first pic is my boss (company owner) up on the 60' boom, from the truck parked on the bridge, 15' above the river.
Second picture is one that I took from the same spot. Big hole river, montana, in february. It gets cold quick up at that height, too.
The rigging to sit up there is a climbing harness and a small load strap girthed around the hook on the jib.
Sorry bout the file size, a little big.zak

Hey, he 's got a smile on his face.

Hey! I just noticed you're in Bezerkeley too. Another PNW transplant (like myself, about 2 weeks ago), or did you just work up in the NW for a stint?zak
"so it goes"
I've got 40 acres (but no mule) in SW Washington (Skamokawa). Lived there for 15 years and in Portland and Seattle for a few more. What brought you to the Bay Area? And isn't it Berzerkeley?? It seems to suit my personality! Where's my aluminum hat? I'm hearin' those dang voices again.....edit: I never met anybody named OSHA. Kinda weird, all caps. Must think alot of himself, eh?. What nationality is he? ;-)

Sorry, Berzerkeley it is. Furthering my wife's edumacation brought us down here.
I've been hearing those voices too- I assumed it was just a byproduct of having other people live within a couple hundred yards of me. Maybe not?
I'm from eastern washington anyhow. Big difference from the bay area. On the whole, I'd say there's less wheat farmers and cattle ranchers here. But I'm new, I could be wrong.zak
"so it goes"
How long are you in the bay area for?
I think we are going to San Fran for New Years, maybe we could me up for a beer or dinner?
I'll have lots of free time while the GF is shopping.Don't call me daughter.
I'll be here for 5 years or so, PhD programs take a while. Definitely let me know if you're going to be in town. We'll probably head back to the NW to see family sometime around Xmas, but I don't know when yet.zak

Cool.Don't call me daughter.
I was gonna ask if your wife's going to Cal, but I think thats a given given she's getting her fud. My wife is a Cal grad (no fud tho). Gotta be smart to be admitted to Cal, but to get a fud in 5 yrs. is amazing. Usually takes 7 yrs., doesn't it? Good for her, she must be brilliant. Oh, I guess thats a given being she's married to a nail-banger! LOLEastern Washington. Flat. Alfalfa. Cooooold! Yea, pretty different from than both Western Washington and Berzerkeley. And I gotta tell you, I'd be really happy if I had people living as far away from me as a couple hundred yards. Its the ones living in my head that really drive me crazy!!Gotta go. I'm off to Tracy to buy a new Freud FT2000E router. I have a feeling I'm going to be feeling like you with that new EVSK.

I think you NEED one of those. <G>
It is as cool as it looks, too. Way back long time ago I was a firefighter/rescue type. We used a crane and an empty dumpster to take someone out of an unusual industrial situation pretty far up. A lot farther up and out than the 85' truck ladder would reach.
Going through the air on the business end of a crane is a very easy, stable ride. The ride up was a lot of fun. Great views. On the ride down
I was focused on the guy we picked up, but I don't remember having any difficulty taking care of him, definitely smoother than the back of an ambulance.
(G) Yup, it would be a lot of shid, iffin his kid got heisted, or his horses got the scurvy.
I just met a dog that could make you believe that they are part human..dog will NOT listen to english..only another language, and is possibly the smartest being I have ever encounterd..I an'y kidding.
If the dog is told to just get the leftnut and leave the rest of you in piece, I bet a Swiss army knife is hidden in the fur, and stitchting needles for the incision closure.
I an going back and delete would you too? Thanks.
