There are a lot of post and beam capes in New England. Many have finished attic space with no vented air space between the insulation and the roof sheathing which often leads to ice dams and the associated problems. I am thinking about creating an air space above the old sheathing with strapping or 2×4’s and new plywood sheathing on top of that. It would allow air movement from new soffit vents to a new ridge vent.
Is this enough to deal with the problem? Has anyone done this? Does another solution come to mind?

Congratulations, you've just re-invented the 'cold roof'
It works in the mountains of Colorado.
