Ice shield or style D first whadya think
I asked a simple question at work yesterday and nearly started a brawl. So what do you guys say? What should go on the roof first – style d dripedge, or the ice and water shield? and why? ( I figure I’m slightly less likely to get hit by a stray punch during the ensuing melee in here anyway.)

I think the drip edge should go down first. The first rule of roofing is to "think like a drop of water", isn' it? So it would seem to make sense to have the drip edge on the bottom, so nothing could run underneath it.
Why are they called apartments when they are all stuck together?
Now think like an ice dam.
I've had this same discussion many times. I always but down the sticky stuff first. I look at it as the last defense against water- if everything else goes wrong, at least thats there. My understanding is that the barrier seals around the nails as you drive them through. Nailing down the edging then putting the barrier on top doesn't seal those nail holes. If you get an unexpected ice dam, water will build up and get to the bare wood under the edging. I've even wrapped the barrier down the fascia an inch then put the edging on over it.
I'm much more concerned about ice dams than leaks from above. But if I did get a leak further up the roof then the water would run on top of the barrier and maybe under the edging and down the fascia - that I can live with.
But, of course, I'm just a Philistine, I could be wrong.
In your ice dam theory, isn't it also possible that water would back up under the shingles, then run back out under the drip edge?
They say television is making people dumber. What do they mean by that?
Yes. But more accurately, water doesn't "run" when you have an ice dam - everything is submerged. And when everything is submerged and you don't have the sticky paper under the drip edge, the bare wood is under water (and ice). If the barrier is doing it's job (and you can argue how well it works when completely submerged), then everything should be protected from the water.
That's my take on it..
WUMP. OUCH!
Don't look like we're gonna agree on this one. Wanna arm wrestle to break the tie ???
According to a recent survey, men say the first thing they notice about a woman is their eyes. And women say the first thing they notice about men is they're a bunch of liars.
WUMP! OUCH!
The drip edge goes first, then the ice membrain short by about 1/4 inch. The starter course goes backwards with the tabs cut off and over hangs by about 1/8" the first course then goes about 1/8" again. carry on up. The side starter strips over hang the sides the same way. Never had a problem yet.
Boss- how 'bout a thumb wrestle? ...big hands..
I'm more curious to hear what Mark and the boys came up with - you started it, now you moderate it...
I can sleep with it either way. Not one to get my Hanes in a knot.
