What's the geographic location?
Redo the photo of the edge with a tape measure across it.
Looks like a softwood ranging from pine to fir to tamarack. Not likely to be spruce.
Any way to date it (e.g. age of the construction it was used in)?
Garage shelving, the thickness is about 3/4 inch by 11 inch wide. This is in Northern California, and a guestimate would be 35-45 years old. Would have been purchased from a local lumber store, but not sure where that store would have gotten their wood from.
More than likely it's Douglas Fir or a related fir.
Could be pine. #2 pine was used for paint grade shelving for years in Calif. If it quite soft it might be cedar, that’s been used for utility wood also. Fir would be a good guess if it is fairly hard.
