I had been working in the trade a few years the first time I saw an electric miter box – old Rockwell 9 incher – but I knew right away it was a winner.
Same with the Kreg pocket hole jig, although it took me several years to buy one.
Well yesterday I used a Porter Cable 7800 drywall sander for the first time, and I am going to buy one. Right away. Can’t believe how long it has taken me to give it a try. That is one sweet frikkin’ tool.
If you haven’t tried it, you’ll be amazed. If you have, I bet you’re smiling and nodding your head as you read this. Unreal.

I bought one, haven't tried it yet though.
Looks like R2-D2 should be operating it.
They're pretty proud of those discs, bought a box of 3. Seemed like I was paying for 50.........

I've had mine for a few years now, and it sure is a sweet tool, but I agree... man the discs are pricey as hell. But it turns a hellacious cramp of a job into something only mildly unpleasant. I'd never go back...
jim..yeah ...
i had considered that...
then i thot...
well , why not just keep on using skim coat plaster so i don't have to sand drywall ?

Exactly!
ditto.
feather it out with thin coats, no sanding, man thats ugly!

real tapers don't sand. go ahead, spank me!
they are nice, they get a little cumbersome overhead, but still better, hook it up to a vac though, that's were they really kick ####...
I rent mine @ the local "Mighty Orange" $27.00 a day with the vac. Nice Gig if you can get it!
I checked at HD and the sign said 45/day, so I rented this one from my rental yard for the same money instead.
Cag - yeah, I have one of those PC shop vacs with the tool activated start that I hooked the sander up to, that's the best part, the containment of the dust. I could sand easier with a pole and swivel screen, but that dust collection is awsome.
Andy - I don't think you could do much floor grinding with this tool, it's kind of light, lacks the mass for heavy floor work. But I wouldn't be surprised if it was the cat's pajammas for refinishing type floor work.
Yeah, those sanding discs are expensive, about 10.00/each around here. But if you use the right grit I bet they last a good while too. I did a kitchen and laundry room with less than one 120 pad...plenty of grit left for the next job. I'm thinking there must be a way to use spray adhesive and paper discs to save a few bucks, too. But even at 10 bucks a pop. the time and agravation saved sealing off a lived in house, and TRYING to clean up the dust after sanding...it's a no brainer.
"Plaster"? Don't see much of that stuff out here except old lath and plaster walls and ceilings in buildings built before WWII. I don't even know of anyone who does plaster work...
Off to Austria tomorrow...Valderie, Valderah, VALDERIE, Val derahhahahahaha...
lots of plaster in Austria , Jim... have a great time !Mike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
