OK, I’m finally ready to buy an impact driver – some deck work coming up, and based on all the raves, I’d prefer to use impact than regular drill. (Read: Excuse to buy more toys) I’ve read all/most the archives, and everyone agrees to get the 12V Makita. But can anyone give specific model numbers? I’ve looked at Makita’s website, and found three models. Here are the only appreciable differences I can see:
6916DWDE – incl. (2) 2.6 AH batts, have to order ($220)
6914DWBE – incl. (2) 2.2 AH batts, available locally at HD ($200)
BTD120SA – incl. (only 1) 2.0 AH batt, but is “MAKSTAR”, supposedly latest/greatest Makita technology. Have to order (~$300 – are they kidding?)
Can anyone make a sound argument for one over the other?
The other twist (AKA real silly question time): I have all Milwaukee 18V cordless now, and I ‘m not anxious to start building a library of chargers & batteries. Despite everyone saying get Makita, how crazy am I for considering the Milw. 14.4V ID (9081-22)? It’s got ~740″# torque vs. ~880″# for the Mak, but otherwise on paper it’s about the same to me. Doubt I’d notice that torque difference. It’d cost ~$250-275; a pretty steep penalty for buying something other than “industry standard”. BUT, I’d get a charger I can use with existing tools, and existing charger with new batts. This ID was not the Milwaukee model reviewed by Gary Katz. That model I understand was a dog, this model is an unknown – I’ve seen no reviews on it other than at Amazon.
Go on, tell me I’m crazy for thinking about Milwaukee and I should just get the Makita…
If everything seems to be going well, you’ve obviously overlooked something.

many times retailers ask for a different model number so that item is null and void when it comes to price matching.
Generally model numbers that vary only by a few letters are the same unit but different batteries.
i havent seen the BTD for sale in stores, ive got that 6914xxxx model. i think either model would be fine.
