Indestructable camara?

ANDYSZ2 | Posted in Tools for Home Building on March 1, 2009 08:44am

My wife just broke her 2nd digital camara while sledding in our new snow fall.

After reading the indestructable phone link I thought one on a camara would be a good topic.

Any suggestions?

I have been buying Nikon cool pic camaras for me and Drew, and now they are clearanced at Sam’s for 84$ so that is my potential solution but still wondering.

don't have it but have read good things.

was considering it ... for the wife, btw.

we decided against it for the moment, she wants something with a bigger zoom, so we're gonna see if my old Nikon can be repaired ... well ... how much to repair it.

she's torn between "small camera" ... and "big zoom".

In the end, I'm thinking get mine repaired, then when her pocket size digital dies get the indestructible one.

Here are a couple of waterproof case companies:

          http://www.dicapac.com/new_eng/index.html

          http://www.altrec.com/aquapac/?cm_mmc=keywords-_-google-_-%28Opt%29+Aquapac-_-Camera+Waterproof+Case

These cases are basicly thick plastic, besides being water and dust proof will give a little impact cusion as well.

I'm very happy with mine, I take my camera with me on the beach and in the pool with no problems.

Does Fisher Price make these in black. You know, for the job site.

      1. gstringe | Mar 03, 2009 05:08am | #8

Probably not in black, but they are bullit proof, however at the same time you don't have bells and whistles...and you probably wouldn't want to get caught with a fisher-Price camera, but if you keep it in the pink leopard case no one will notice ;-)Nobody gets in to see the wizard...not nobody...not no how!

Canon is coming out with a new rugged waterproof shockproof camera:http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=2590&modelid=18332Might be worth checking out. I tried out an Olympus, but I'd stay far far away from them. They use a dead proprietary storage format (xD). As for zoom on a PS, I find them usually lacking to begin with. A wide-angle lens is far more useful in my opinion. Hence why I got my Kodak v705 fixed, it has the widest lens available in a PS camera, 23mm.Z

U bring up another camera issue we have ...

wide angle. Is that wide angle "wide" enough to shoot a small bath job?

I have an older Nikon ... has a bent pin in the card slot at the moment ...

            that I otherwise love.

But ... should have waited till the cam's with interchangable lenses came down in price. Thinking that's the next logical "work camera" step. Need something to shoot the small bath jobs.

Yes, it's ridiculously wide for PS.Take this photo for instance:
http://mackzully.smugmug.com/gallery/5737850_bmPHN#354397980_5kzgRThe allthread in the photo is 10', so along that line of the photo, edge to edge it's about 11'. I'm 6'4", and the ceiling there is 9'6", so the camera is only about 3'-3'6" from the ceiling. Here's a good breakdown of the camera from realtors, who had reason to love the EOL'ed v705:http://res.realestateshows.com/panasonic-lumix-fx35-vs-kodak-v705/
http://res.realestateshows.com/sell-your-camera-on-ebay-buy-this-one/The buttons are a bit small on it, but even with my fat fingers, I don't really have a problem. I broke the screen on it (had it in my pants pocket), and bought an Olympus 790sw because it's water and shockproof, but I couldn't stand how narrow the lens was on it. So I ended up buying a new screen for it on eBay from Hong Kong for $30 shipped and it works like new again. The other nice thing that I really like about it is that the wide angle lens is completely fixed. It has its own sensor and all, and the zoom lens is also completely internal, so there are few fiddly places to get munged up. It's covered in masonry and roofing products and it's not failed me.I'd say away from a seperately lensed camera as wide lenses are always $$$ and then you'll have to carry the damn thing around. And 99% of the time, the camera I have with me is 100% better than camera I don't, so small and portable is key.Z

            Fantastic!

Thanks for the reply. Looks like that might be the next camera.

Here is a sample shot from my 28mm Lumix TZ3, I'm 6' tall and I'm standing about 6' away from the far wall (sink).  Bath size is 5' (tub) by 7.5' wide.  That is a 32" tub, and you are just missing the near corner, only by one inch.
