Went to India for a few weeks holiday I saw among other amazing sights (not to mention smells) some interesting scaffold, this one on the side of an historic fort was to remove bee hives which were annoying the tourists not exactly OHS standard but I think it is a work of art and requires a lot of skill. The other photo was on a dome opposite the Taj Mahal not sure if its going up, down or its finished.

According to my DW, in Bangladesh and India ( she lived in Bangladesh) if the job remains "unfinished" it is not taxed, hence a lot of incomplete projects!

Twenty years ago Hong Kong builders used bamboo scaffold for their high-rises. Bamboo was joined with some sort of fibrous twine. Saw some footage of a French rockclimber scaling one of these scaffold assemblies set against a skycraper.

When my FIL built his new house in S India, Madras, it is customary to bribe pretty much everyone for everything, gov permits, electricity hookup ect... i was shocked at how open they were to it, if you dont bribe them, gov officials, you wont get anything done. i wont even go into voting corruption, my MIL was explaining this to me one day.. all i can say is wow...

Hi cal,
I think everyone needs to go to India to realize how much we have, the people are poor but are so friendly, after the bombing they just get on with it, the traffic is mad but everyone is patient and road rage isn't in their vocabulary. We went to cities, villages and schools and except for the beggars in the city (an industry really) the people were always smiling.
Cheers,

my wife who was born of russian and french parents was born in tehran ,iran in the post world war 2 . the shah heyday her father was a civil engineer was actually more accuratlly the company he was employed with, built abu-grab prison in iraq. payoffs are way of life pretty much all over that part of the globe. at least in the mid-east that kinda pay off is worked into the overall price boksheesh (sp)as it is refered to. i tried to spell it correctly but who knows?? it is ####S.O.P way of doing business. we have a friend george skurla that deals in armament sales ( grumman aviation) says still goes on. and to use that word will usually just get a expectant smile..." we judge ourselves by our motives, and others by their actions........."
