   Don't own an IR hunting scope but I doubt it would work very well. You need a fine IR resolution to see a diff of a few degrees. I have the entry level FLIR, set me back $5K.

   Someone from IFive is gonna call me tonight for a rebuildt IR camera device, apparently the factory is trying to dump some refurbished ones.   1 year warranty.  I live in Europe and Russian military IR equipment is dirt cheap and at every flohmarket around.  If it works at all, its cheaper then what you need to charge for an audit.

   I've been trying to come up with an on-the-cheap way to do this, too. I don't think any of the digital-converted early DSLRs will do the level of resolution necessary.

   I'd found an instrument rental place my work uses that has one available. Thought in terms of getting it for a week and seeing if a bunch of folks would split of the cost, then shoot photos at all the homes.

   The other thought I had, but haven't looked into, is whether you could work something out w/ the local fire department. They have IR cameras on some level for finding hot spots. But I don't know if you could make a donation or something and use it on your house for an hour or two.

   I have not attempted any of the digital slr. I have some sonys but missed the generation that had the real nightshot features. Actually if anyone knows how to hot rod a Mavica series into this I have a camera to donate to the cause.If the Fire Department has any community outreach programs they might be able to do something light duty and not interfere with the LOHI (Loyal Order of Housing Inspectors):<}I am so far out in the boondocks, we should have a barbeque for the fire department annually. When they arrive they would find no fire hydrants and water with enough iron to rust their equipment before it made through the pumper. If we wanna fight a fire we hook to one of 6 5000 gal tanks on the top of the hill and hope for the best. Where do you live in case anyone wants to join you in a picture day?

   I didn't put the quotes in properly. that was an email I just received today.For those who are interested this is the quote from the company that does conversions of certain Nikons, Canons, and Fuji's
   "Can the converted camera be used for thermal imaging?No, infrared converted cameras are sensitive to about 1200nm only, thermal imaging requires sensitivity from about 7,000nm to over 14,000nm."So if you can find a scope or binoculars that meet that criteria I guess you could see. You still lack the ability to save the image to a media card with binoculars. I guess we better get together and rent a virtual one we can email back and forth to each other.:<}
