Ok, only the handrail system is timberframed, but beyond the through bolts holding the posts to the rim, there are no metal fasteners in the handrail system.
I special ordered rough cut full dimension cedar 6x6x12′, and all but one was free of heart. I was very impressed. I picked the best material for the posts and then resawed the remainder for the top and bottom rail.
The posts and rails were mortised with a Makita chisel mortiser, and the the free tenons are reclaimed white oak, and I left the bottom edge hand-hewn, which you can see in some of the pictures. The pegs are also white oak.
The free tenons in the middle posts are through mortised, and therefore don’t require a peg in the post.
This deck is going on it’s third summer. The finish is Land Ark, which has held up great on the railing system but not so good on the decking. I wish I would’ve pushed harder with my mother in law to just let the thing grey out.
The corner detail I just completed two weeks ago (heh heh). It is “floating” and has no support underneath.
The last two pictures are from the yard. The first one is looking south toward the Como Peaks and the tiny bit of snow they are still holding. The second one is looking west at Blodgett Canyon. The haze is from smoke from forest fires.
Anyways, onto the pics.

You're just south of me, Jesse. I live near the Stevi airport.
I just stepped out on my own deck to look down your way...can't see a damn thing for the smoke now.
OH, nice work, too!!!
Thanks. It's strange, it's not that smokey down here, but we can see the smoke just pouring over the top somewhere near Gash Point and the north end of the valley just looks brutal. I'm sure we'll catch up with the funk any day now.
I heard on the radio that 47000 acres are burning on the Clearwater Forest in Idaho. If we get dry lightning now...
Good looking work. You should be very proud of that. White oak is a good exterior wood.
What type of sealer is "Land Ark"?Chuck Slive, work, build, ...better with wood
steven, thanks. Land Ark is a tung oil/linseed oil mix that has no chemical dryers or anything toxic. It smells like citrus and takes quite awhile to dry.
