Hello, I have a job to install cedar shingle siding. Is it acceptable to nail directly over Tyvek? I’ve heard of this breathable mesh, but that may be just on roofing applications. I was planning on dipping the shingles, and using stainless steel staples with a 5.5″ reveal. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Fazz, welcome to Breaktime!
Nailing directly over Tyvek in some cases has led to deterioration of the Tyvek. You'd be smart to use the breathable mesh, I forget the name, but it's much thinner than the CedarBreather used on roofs. Another option would be to use tar paper instead of Tyvek--it works just as well as Tyvek, without the deterioration issues.
I like to use nails for shingles, because it allows them to expand and contract a bit more and because they're easier to remove when you need to do a repair. I've seen galvanized staples rust through after a few years, but you would do fine with SS staples.
Finally, if I were you I wouldn't spend any time dipping my own shingles when you can by them pre-dipped. Maibec is the industry leader in the northeast, but Fraiser makes an excellent product at a better price.
If you do a search of this site for cedar shingles you'll find countless discussions on this topic. Give it a try!

What Mike said. They will be a pain to dip, and a pain to replace if fastened with staples. Go with pre-dipped and ss nails.
The mesh product you seek is Home Slicker by Benjamin Obdyke http://www.benjaminobdyke.com . It's kind of pricey. I might just go with building felt.
Good luck.
