Installing ext door: flashing, but what about the remaining gap?
Hi there everyone!
I’m installing an ext door on a structure where there isn’t one currently, it’s a stick frame with sheathing / wrap / vinyl siding structure. I watched this video to see how to properly flash the opening:
https://www.finehomebuilding.com/project-guides/windows-doors/video-how-to-flash-a-rough-opening
but I’m wondering what to do about the gap left between the RO and the door jamb. Should there be some tape or more flashing between the two or is it acceptable that the space between the two remain unsealed and just covered by trim? I’ve always used expandable foam to fill the space for insulating purposes but that doesn’t seem to do anything for waterproofing.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time!

I would also recommend watching a video by Gary Katz on door installation. Should be an easy search. You'll see some important information on door door installs. What voids are left can be filled with door and window foam.
I would think using flashing tape to cover the gap prior to installing trim couldn’t hurt anything. Obviously don’t extend tape past your trim reveal, that would look pretty lame.
