I need to replace some exterior 1×4 trim on my 30 year old home. I’ve noticed, and was surprised to see the builder used staples to affix the exterior trim. It has held up well. I’m not sure of the staple size or how they were put in. I didn’t realize staples were in use as a construction fastener 30 years ago. I assume they used a staple gun of some sort. So my question is, would you recommend using a pneumatic stapler? If so, would staples be just as reliable as nails using a pneumatic nailer? What size staple would you recommend? If not, I have a PC framing nailer. What size nail would you recommend.

Staples for factory-applied trim have been pretty much the norm for 3-4 decades. A little unusual to see staples used in the field, but not really that odd.
In some ways staples are superior to nails (much less tendency to pull through, eg) but in other ways inferior (eg, they can't be as easily countersunk and concealed).
No "law" saying you should use one or the other.
A framing nailer probably isn't a good choice -- you should use something that can drive casing nails if you go with nails.
For exterior trim, I usually opt for SS siding nails shot from a gun (same gun used for siding, how convenient.) You could try a trim nailer (15/16 ga) but wood movement might loosen the nails grip on the trim. If pvc, use the siding nails or trim head screws.
I fasten exterior trim with framing nailer, finish nailer, and staples [ 1/4, 7/16 or 1/2 crown] at different times. Oh, and there are also hand nails.
Used 3 or 4 different versions of the above just today in fact. All depends on the details. Staples are less likely to split the trim in most cases. There are few simple answers.
