Last year in my own house I used the stuff that looks like sanded OSB and it was crap. It dimpled at the fasteners and or the fasteners would blow through if they hit a soft spot.
A few months ago I did a kitchen floor and I used the pricey plywood stuff that comes in 4x4 sheets with a 4" grid printed on it for fastener spacing.
The pricy stuff was worth it . I used narrow crown staples and white glue to hold it down. I used minimal patching compound . And it turned out a lot better.
Also dont forget to make sure the joints in the underlay dont line up with the tile. Also I think it looks alot better if you alternate the 'grain' of the tiles and then small discrepencies in joint layout are not as obviuos. cheers Rik.
Thanks Rik.
Not familiar with the "sanded OSB" but custom here is Luan. Any thoughts on that and what size staples to use? 1'' ? I have not seen the expensive 4X4 material you speek of. What is it called?

Hi Ghoffer
The underlayment I used is called SYLVAPLY it comes in different thicknesses.I think a 4'x4' sheet in 1/4" costs about $10 (cdn). I'm sure luan would work well for you it should be a bit cheaper. It's not always available here. I used 1 1/4" staples(use divergent points if there available)and about 1 litre of glue to 100-150 square feet spread with a small notch trowel. That,s common practice here. good luck Rik
