Installing Window In a load bareing wall
Hey Guys,
I have a 6′ window that I want to install on an exterior wall. I’m going to open up the drywall and frame all from the inside. I’m not sure how to temporarily support the wall. The ceiling joists run parallel to the wall the window is going in, so Im not sure how to transfer the load straight down in this situation.
Some insight would be appreciated. ThanksĀ
Mic

Is the roof framing (rafters) supported by this wall?
Yes
If you have room above the window opening, consider removing drywall there, and installing a temporary header face-screwed into the studs.
make it longer than the room you need for your window header and framing.
run a few numbers to make sure your temporary header will support the load, and make sure to include the shear strength of the screws you use to transfer load from the studs to the temporary header. If your calculations call for more support at the ends of your temporary header that transfer loads to the ends, you can add a temporary jack studs
This should start with an understanding of what the loads are.
How long are the floor joists above?
How long is the supported roof spans above?
How much load are they generating?
(you can likely neglect snow loads from the roof.)
consult an engineer if you need help.
