Cheapest? Staple up fiberglass batting.
Highest-R value and lowest air infiltration? Spray the cavity full of foam (I used urethane in my own hosue).
Best bang for the buck? Probably dense-packed cellulose.
Like Real Estate there are six important factors: Location, location, location. And budget, budget, budget. A custom house in Alaska dictates a different solution than a spec house in Florida. -David
Johnnie, i've been working on this same issue. I have 1200 square feet of walls to insulate. Foam would be about $2000. DP cells would be about $600, installed; $320 if i do it myself and get the machine rental for free.
The learning curve ought to be somewhat expensive, though!
