How do you insulate a hip roof with proper ventilation. My problem is two fold. First, the rafters “die” into the attic floor so there is not soffit vent. Second, the rafter bays, in which I would place foam vents, run into the common rafters. Ridge vent is not an option either as the roof pretty much comes to a point. I could put insulation on the floor, but not if I would like to use the space for an office or something like that. There is no insulation there now.

In certain scenarios, flat roofs make more sense than pitched roofs (and vice versa).

Razzman,
Thanks. I keep asking other builders that I know and no one has a good answer and some recomended that I try this posting.
Once again, thanks.

Well, there is a search function here on BT that sometimes works alright enough to reach into those old threads that deal with various subjects.
If you scroll down in the lower left corner of your screen there is a search function that will take you to previous threads dealing with whatever you type in the search bar.
If you type in 'hip roof insulation' or other keywords of the subject matter you may be able to get a supply of data from those old threads.
A hint, get a cup of coffee first 'cause there is a bookoo amount of venting data in those old threads.

Why do you want to vent the roof? It's essentially impossible to effectively vent hips. Why not consider a hot roof instead? That is, insulate the bottom of the roof deck with closed cell foam. This has the added advantage of bringing any ductwork in the attic into the building envelope, and it's becoming an accepted practice. Although the 2003 IRC still requires roof venting, the Connecticut Supplement, for example, allows hot roofs.

I'm with Andy, Hot roof. Spray foam will work best.
Ripped and foamed in place ridged is a close second(and you can do it yourself).
Dense pack cellulose is third.
FG is a distant seventh.
