I need some help on this. I am insulating a 100 year old house for the first time. I am using fiberglass batts. The old style cross bacing is giving me a hard time. I have been shoving fiberglass inbetween the members and trying to make it looke good (very time consuming and looks like hell).
What is the right way to do it?
My next job is the 1500 sq ft crawl space with 2X10’s at 11 inch oc with cross bracing every eight feet. So I could really use some help.
thanks in advance.

a photo would help explain your terminology.

Excellence is its own reward!
The bracing is in the ceilings and the crawl space between the joists. The same places were you would install blocking today.
I hope this helps.
well.... 1st....
i would not use fiberglass
2d you don't say where the job is... and your profile gives no clue
also.... you haven't listed any priorities :

if you do a poor job of insulating with fiberglass, you might just as well have saved your time and money
I am going to the house today and will take pictures of the cross bracing I am describing.
Thanks for your interest.
good idea...then we'll all know what the beast looks likeMike Hussein Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
If doing w/ fiberglass, I would cut a series of triangles slightly oversized and install them and then come back w/ full batts. Should be really pretty easy. And we don't need no stinkin' pics to know what you explained very clearly (unless you didn't 'splain it very clearly :) ).

I thought so. I will try the triangle idea for sure. I talked to my PUD inspector and he said typically people fill the cavity with loose fiberglass. Basically what I have been doing. I wish foam was cheaper for the average joe and I could just spray them all. Oh well. Thanks for the reply.
