I would like to do something to reduce cold floors above well ventilated crawlspacee (& breezeway). The subfloor is T&G fir.
Due to all the plumbing, knob & tube, romex and BX wiring, it seems to me that fiberglass batts will only work in less than 1/2 the area.
Would wedging rigid foam board in between the joists against the subfloor work? In most areas there is enough clearance above the obstrucions for 2″ board. It also seems that the foam board would stop air infiltration fairly well.
I live in fairly mild climate (San Francisco Bay Area)so pipe freezing etc is not a concern.

Kinda depends on your budget, but have you considered spray-in insulation, such as Icynene? It is an expanding foam. As it is sprayed on, it will fill in and expand between all the pipes & wires.
If you use the 2" foam sheets it would help to go around the edges and seal the gaps with a can of foam (ie "Great Stuff" etc). Unless you can cut them to a much tighter fit to start than I ever can :-)
*Many are now coming to the realization that venting a crawlspace is often inviting too many problems in that warm, moist air enters during warm sesson and condenses in the cooler temperatures. Some forward thinkers are making certain moisture from soil in crawl is well controlled with poly, venting is then done away with and the exterior walls are insulated rather than the floor. Will be interesting to see how codes will treat crawl space venting in the future. Just some thoughts.
