Hello everyone!
I need to add insulation to my attic floor. The roof and outside walls meet with no overhang. The ventilation that I do have is two gable vents and a powered roof fan. Looking to blow in insulation and was wondering if I could blow insulation all the way to where the roof and walls meet or do I have to leave some space. Do I still need to install the foam baffles on the roof in this area for air flow even though I do not have and soffit venting.
Thanks

in a word....nope.
No I can't insulate this way or no I don't have to install the baffles?

nope , ya don't need the baffles, they are to allow the soffit air a path to the ridge..in your situ. uneeded.
Go Stab yourself Ya Putz! Ya think I Parked here?
like sphere said... the baffles only function is to provide a channel for air to move from the EXTERIOR thru a ventilated soffit up above the insulation and out thru , preferably, a ridge vent... or whatever vents you have..
since you have NO SOFFIT VENTS.. you can insulate right to the eaves.. the more the merrier..
now .. if there were some way for you to integrate an eave vent ( use your imagination )...then the baffles would be useful..
bottom line.. no vents.. no baffles.. i like to keep my options open so we usually find a way of venting the eaves and adding ridge ventsMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
what's the powered roof vent for?... i hope you don't use it during the winter..Mike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Mike,
The roof vent was installed this fall in a new roof. It's use will only be in the summer and is temp/humidity controlled. I intend to insulate this weekend. We currently are having some water back up in the house which is caused by a combination of some work currently being done on the house (new siding) but on a 8 degree day the snow and ice is still melting. Can you say heat loss? I looked up in the attic and pulled back what i thought was insulation that went to the eaves but there is a space of about 2 to 3 feet of open joists (no insulation). This is the reason for my questions. I didn't know if this was the correct practice or not.
Thank you all for you suggestions and wish me well in my insulation fun

Have you foamed any penetrations that might connect the conditioned space of the house with the attic? That's every bit as critical a step as insulating, especially if you intend to use fiberglass batts.Andy Engel, The Former Accidental Moderator
Andy,
That is in my plans. Thanks

Make sure there's no knob and tube wiring in the voids before insulating, if the house is that old. (See current thread on removing K&T.) If not, disregard and happy insulating.
I never met a tool I didn't like!
Well, maybe. How old is your roof? If you use baffles, the next time you re-roof, you could install vented drip edge.

Why vent a perfectly good roof? Here's a perfect house to experiment with. There's no venting now, to speak of. Blow that sucker full of cellulose and see what happens.Andy Engel, The Former Accidental Moderator
