Insulating roof/ceiling- no attic
I want to open up into the attic to make a sleeping loft, sorta Japanese style. I have 19′ joists, 2×6 on 24″ centers, with roof rafters (2x 6) to match, 71″ height. I want to insulate without lowering the headroom. The attic has soffit and ridge vents. We’re going to have a couple of openable skylights.
I know of several choices.
1.install rafter vents, then fill with R11 fiberglass.
2. SAA, except squeezing R 19 fiberglass.
3. SAA, Install drywall , then blow in cellulose. Dense pack? Will that compress the rafter vents? Should we just not use rafter vents, dense pack only and close the ridge?
4. Omit the rafter vents, close the ridge vents. install R 19 fiberglass.
5. Fill the rafter spaces with sheet foam to 3-4 “, allow roof to vent above, or fill to 5” and not worry?
6. Spray foam? like used on metal roofs.
How should I do the gable end wlls?
Which of the above is lhe most pratical? We live in Shreveport La, so summer heat is our problem. I may frame in and wire for a wall vent fan, if all else fails.
