Insulating shallow slope open beam roof
I have a house in SF Bay area (pretty moderate climate) that has a roof made of 2″ wood planks covered by a tar and gravel roof. There is zero insulation. Any thoughts on the best way to add at least a couple on inches of insulation. I would rather not do it on the inside since the wood ceiling is one of the few nice features in the house. Attached is a JPEG Showing the roof roughly
Thanks,
Dave

A layer of rigid insulation on top of the existing roof and then another layer of sheathing and then roofing. I worked for a roofing company in Sonoma County and we did this occasionally. Another option is to lay joists on top of the existing roof joists to create the insulation space, if you want to get more insulation up there.

Our roofer just did this with premade panels made up of 3" polyisocynate? insulation, 1"x2"s at 16" oc for ventilation, and 7/16" osb. He used ventilated, oversized drip edge and ridge vent.
