I am just about to embark on remodelling a 25×16 ft existing addition of my home. It is a 100 year old house and consequently has full 4 inch studs that are about 20in on center. My question is concerning how to insulate it. I would like to open up the room by vaulting the ceiling (the rafters are also full 4 inch). I would prefer not to have to fur out all studs and rafters. The additional concern I have is that as I vent the ceiling I am losing even more insulateable space.

You can get the walls filled with blown in insulation, but I've run into a couple of old houses that were balloon framed and the stud cavities were open to the crawlspace and had to be blocked. In the ceiling, I would imagine you'll have to furr out some, but you'll probably have collar ties which means you can insulate over the peak area conventionally (R-30 for vaulted ceilings in Oregon) so only furr out below the collar ties to accomodate whatever your local code requires (leaving a vent path, of course).
Some people would bitch even if they were hung with a new rope.
