I need help trying to figure out the type of insulation to use in the crawl space and unfinished portion of my basement. I live in central Ohio in a home built in 1986 by M/I Homes. Three quarters of the basement is a “full basement” (approximately 7 ft high walls) and the remaining quarter is a crawl space (about 5 ft high walls). Three quarters of the full basement has been professionally finished with fiberglass insulation behind the walls. Concrete was recently installed in the floor of the crawl space. The unfinished portion of the full basement along with the crawlspace has foil covered blanket fiberglass insulation covering the top ~5 ft (from below the sill plate down). The rim joists are insulated with fiberglass. The walls of the basement are cinder block. So here are the questions: 1) Given the age, type of construction, and location of my house, do I need to have insulation covering the cinder block walls in the unfinished portion of my basement? 2) If insulation is suggested, what type should I use and how much of the walls should I cover? 3) I know I need to insulated the rim joists exposed in the basement. What type is best for the rim joists? Thank you in advance for any help you provide.
