I have a S. California home vitage 1957 i.e. no insulation except in the attic. The floors are Oak and ceramic tile; it makes a nice heat sink (it will be 30 tonight).
Im looking for sudgestions on insulating in the crawl space 24″ to 36″ open space to work in. I’m thinking of foam but it seemes like a tight space to use a spray gun?

Foam would be great for your floor, but difficult to apply. If you want to do it yourself, just use some fiberglass batts. Make sure you seal any holes into the house and they add a VB to your crawlspace floor (if one isn't already there).
Thanks for the input the foam is tempting but hard to install.
What about sheet foam cut to fit. Then use canned foam to seal it.
I like the foam but it seems to be expensive for the R value and hard to install around the plumbing and electerical. The ridgid is timpting untell I think of pulling it through a crawl hole 3' wide.
Regarding the batts, Simpson (and others) make batt hangers, maybe you have seen them. They are stiff pieces of wire that you slightly bow and place between joist.
They are relatively inexpensive and very fast to use.
Another post suggested sheets of polystyrene and spray foam. The R value per inch of foam board is much less than fiberglass, not to mention the $/R-value.
In addition, using the spray cans overhead. I'ld love to see a picture of the installer with his eye's foamed shut. I can't seem to use even one can without covering my hands and at least three articles of exposed clothing.
ya I have spent a few days picking foam off of myself too. The only thing that conserns me about the bats is peotecting them from water saturation under the house.
Is it wet under there? If so, it may be best to address that first.Matt
Hi. Just a note. sheet foam comes in all types. If you use Isocyenurate/Sp? it's the highest R per inch available. You can cut it with a utility Knife or a hand saw. It's fairly easy to work with. And you could pre cut it to fit in a smaller access. If lt's force fit snug, you won't need to hand foam it in. I used a straight edge and utility knife like working sheet rock and then went with a dull hand saw down the score line and it comes out very accurate
