A client recently called me about a noise coming from inside (actually on top of) a wall and after a little investigation I discovered that it was coming from a speaker and would occur when the intercom system was turned on. It was a loud buzzing sound and as soon as I disconnected the speaker it seemed to stop. However, the client said they heard it throughout the night afterwards coming from somewhere else. They have also noticed that the door bell isn’t working anymore (could be that the speaker was connected to the door bell? I know nothing about these systems but wanted to help as I am doing a fair amount of unrelated work for them. Any thoughts on what is causing the noise and how to remedy it? Thanks.

Impossible to say from your description. The house may have a combo doorbell/intercom and the "bell" comes through the intercom speakers.
Buzzing speakers indicates either an "open" connection somewhere or a bad power supply in the intercom amplifier.
The stuff isn't rocket science, but you need a little knowledge of audio electronics to trouble-shoot it.
Is it a wireless intercom/doorbell system? Some of them use RF sent over AC wiring and are subject to noise introduced from various sources.
