Interesting House

| Posted in Photo Gallery on February 16, 2002 04:37am

View Image I’ve been photographing interesting old houses in my area, and this is one of them. I don’t know any details about it except that it’s on the northwest side of the West Point military reservation. I’ve never seen a four-story private residence outside the city before.

    1. Joseph_Calvetti | Feb 04, 2002 02:58am | #2

*Mike, no it's not. It's about ten miles away near Central Valley on county road 9. It doesn't appear to be occupied. I suspect WP owns it.

*View ImageThis one's about three blocks from South Gate. Rectangular footprint, three-gable roof. It's pretty ordinary except the walls are 8" cut granite. It's been broken up into apartments.

*I'm not seeing any pics. Just a square with a small square in the corner w/a red 'x' in it.Joseph- ever taken the Hudson Valley Ferry? Beautiful views.

*Looks like his host, "bestweb.net" is having some problems, or is simply refusing hot links to graphics now. The pictures showed up just fine yeaterday.

*Yea, "best"web lets me down again. Adele, I haven't heard of the Hudson Valley Ferry. Where's it located?

          3. Adele_ | Feb 06, 2002 06:26pm | #7

*It leaves from Kingston. And I had the name wrong. Parents took me on it a couple of years ago when I was visiting and it was too cool to see all the mansions on the hills overlooking the Hudson.

*OK Joseph- Those must have been undercover narc houses cause the pictures I saw the other day are now long gone. That one stone one was very cool but out of control skateboarders and sleders could end up in someones living room.Bob

*Photos show up fine this morning. What a relief to know that someone else has a habit of taking picutures of other peoples' houses. I thought I was strange. Now I know that at least there are two of us. ;-)

            * Here's an old house with a sanguinary history that's around the corner from me. It was orginally down by the river and was moved to the present location with mule teams. It had a much more gothic aspect before one of the owners cut down the spruce trees that surrounded it. The gable of my house is visible between the red and the yellow houses.

*joe.. do you ever get over the river to beacon?when i was there the cog was still running and the dinning hall at the top was on it's last legs.. all those interesting little summer "camps"we've got a lot of them from the same era, now mostly remodeled and added onto so they're all about $300K today..another interesting town was Garrison where they filmed Hello Dolly.. any of those victorian ladies survive? I haven't been back since'69, though my brother & i do play golf at James Baird a half-dozen times a year. I was living in Cornwall-on-Hudson then.. and driving the Storm King Hwy to West Point.

          8. Joseph_Calvetti | Feb 09, 2002 05:08pm | #12

*Hi Mike,I drive through Beacon occasionally, but I haven't had a reason to stop there. I remember riding the cog railway when I was a kid. I climbed the track to the top a couple of times but it's been awhile since I've been up there. Once some friends and I hiked to the fire-watch tower on the next peak and climbed up it. We could see the taller buildings in NYC from there. Prices for old houses are still pretty reasonable on this side of the river. The problem is that they're rarely in the best locations. The house in the third picture was sold just for the value of the lot it's sitting on. I was looking at buying it myself, but I didn't have the money to do decent restoration.

*Hey Joe,I hiked to the top of Mt. Beacon last year. Beautiful day, great views but too much garbage and beer cans about, what a shame. The best thing that is still up there is the old cable engine inside the wheelhouse for the incline railway, there is just no way to ever remove something so massive. Also went on a historic house walk in Newburg last year, awesome homes with plaster cast mouldings and parquet and inlay floors. Most were torn down for Urban Renewel in the 60's Quite a few people putting big money into them to bring them back to the period. Most are now one block from cracktown but as more money comes in so does more police and the neighborhood gets better eventually.

*what's the latest on the old New Haven RR bridge at Poughkipsee ?.. is it still standing.. last i heard it was part of urban renewal.. with a plan for a strip-mall built on it ....then there was a fire.. & i lost track

          11. George_Abramshe | Feb 16, 2002 02:14am | #15

*Mike, the bridge is still there and there is an ongoing fued between the 'Save the Bridge Society' (or something like that),who want to turn it into a pedestrian walkway, and the towns of Poughkeepsie and Highland. Apparently the society was bequeethed the right of way to the bridge, but not ownership, but is unwilling to make or meet all of the repairs the city feels are neccessary. The present owners haven't paid taxes in years and the city is unwilling to take over the property. All in all it is a very ugly situation and it changes from month to month. It's funny because the city of Poughkeepsie uses it as the backdrop on all their logo's and such. Poughkeepsie just approved a plan from a local developer to build a luxury hotel, conference center, a couple of restaurants, a dock and marina and more parkspace on their non developed waterfront beneath the bridge. It will be interesting to find out how they will deal with this when construction starts next year.

          13. Mike_Smith | Feb 16, 2002 04:37am | #17

*ok... rotate for better viewing..here's some local color... a quahogger in february... the salt marsh is only open for shellfish in winter...50 cents each for cherrystones (good for clams on the halfshell)..
