Introduction

hast | Posted in General Discussion on July 17, 2007 04:47am

Hello All – I have been lurching in the background and picking up great stuff from each of you. I’ve been a subscriber to Fine Homebuilding for many years – not because I/we are builders, but because remodeling and designing space has been a passion of mine since I can remember.

My husband and I are now on the brink of breaking ground for an addition on our home. I’m somewhere between ecstatic and scared to death. With the help of my husband’s 4 brothers and assorted other friends and relatives, we plan to do the majority of the work ourselves. This comes from a cross between feeling pride and accomplishment for a job well done (that is yet to be seen 😉 and a need to shave as much off the cost as possible. So guys – consider this fair warning that I may be asking lots of questions.

My first question stems from my personal aversion to wasting materials. I have several 100′ rolls of galvanized  14 gauge welded wire mesh that I used to build rabbit cages. I’ve stopped breeding and am getting rid of all the stuff I acquired. It occurred to me that I might be able to use some of the wire in the process of laying tile for a floor. Is this feasible? Other suggestions for using it?

Thanks.

I'd use it to help fill a dumpster.

Use the mesh to build a fence around the site after the various rabbits come to help the build. Keep 'em from leaving until it's done. Throw some lettuce & beer in occasionally.

    Other suggestions for using it?

Got a road trip south planned?  I've been thinking about raising rabbits.  Other than that, thinshell concrete is about the only use I know.  Probably wasn't what you were planning for your addition...

    I've stopped breeding

You probably could have worded that a little better.

You might could add it to the floor slab in the concrete, but othetr than that it has little value.

In high-security situations wire mesh is sometimes secured to the inside of studs before drywall is applied. This will ensure your guests can't break through the walls if the turkey turns out badly on Thanksgiving.

Ebay may be your best bet otherwise . . .

I had planned to thank you guys for the warm welcome but this was way better - Now that I've stopped laughing under my breath cuz I'm at work . . . you guys are too much.

DickRussell - My experience tells me that lettuce & beer aren't the best combo . . . those nice little pellets get a little soupy.

It would take "Fast"Eddie to pick up on that comment. And for the records . . . no kids, 2 dogs that act like kids.

draftguy - You've been talking to my husband . . . I used to love cooking but he's so fussy, there's no point to trying new things. Actually, turkey is one thing he's ok with.

Well - back to business -

These pics are part of the drawing for the addition of a master suite and family room. Everything is on one floor – planning for the future. We bought the house (basically a starter home) with the plan to stay 4 or 5 years and then build new. That plan bit the dust with the real estate market down turn in the early 90’s. So now, almost 20 years later, I don’t want to move. I like our neighbors and the neighborhood but the house is just too darn small. Both my husband and I are “hobby”people, thus – lots and lots of stuff. Jim has a bunch of wood working tools that don’t get much use because the basement is too full. He’s also a ham radio operator, a railroad buff and computer geek . . . anyway, you get the picture.

We’ll also be adding a porch in front and a small bump out for a window seat.

        Greetings hast,

If there is a way to capture those files from Quicktime to a normal jpeg attachment of less than 100KB it will go a long way towards presenting you query to the low powered puters and dial up patrons of BT, thereby an assist to receiving answers.

         Cheers

Here you go.Good file size. But screen size is still rather large.Reason for that is because the text got too blurry when I made it any smaller.

          Yeh... That'll work.

Belie3ve you me, eddie isn't he only one who noticed the comment that you had stopped breeding - but you are too new here to frolic with over such foibles.

Well I'm glad I was able to brighten your day. I had to repeat the stories to the guys I play cards with at lunch.

I'm frustrated waiting for quotes to pour the foundation. One guy made an appointment to come look at the plans and site and never showed up. One guy came, sounded excited about the job, said he'd get an estimate in the mail in a couple days - that was two weeks ago. That leaves me with just one estimate and I have no idea if the price is in the ballpark or not. He did come recommended by a friend so I'm inclined to just go with it.

Catch ya later - I need to do some actual reading some more How-To's.
