I am in need of a simple inventory program. What I need for it to do for this old guy, me, is to help me remember the vast amounts of stuff and where it’s located in the shop.
Example
I hope to find affordable software that will let me enter a name then descriptive words, allow me to post a digital photograph into the log and enter it’s location according to some cryptic algorithm I’ve invented,(just trying to be funy on the last part).
The idea then would be to type in at the computer for example:
Bolt 1/4″ x 3-1/2″ galvanized or My car keys ford truck
Then it would say you have 1 or maybe more possible items and then it would bring them up with pictures.
As in the keys it might say, 1 possibility, location…Last place you had em, dummie!

Except for the pictures part, it sounds like you need a wife

ROTF!
I have a wife. She does handle photos, never forgets. It's bad enough her telling me where to go now and pointing out my bad memory, I should invite her into my sanctuary,(my shop)?
LOL, Just the other day she was helping me when I planed some pine with my power plane and she asked if it was a new tool. I'd had it for seven years or so. If she is incharge of inventorying tools, she knows when you spend money for one and she want a new TV or stereo to balance it out..

Thanks all for the help. As for my wife,Piffin, if she knew half of what I got out there your so right. It would cost me several hundred dollars worth of women stuff before I'd get another nail. LOL
Last time mine questioned a tool purchase, I asked her, "How do you think I tripled my houyrly fee in the last ten years?"
end of arguement..

I gotta remember that one. My soon to be wife is a fast talker and I'll be using that answer in the near future to keep the convo short & sweet.
go look at http://www.cnet.com
It was not long ago that I saw on a reputable site like PC World or Kim Komando, a link for a freeware download of just such a simple inventory program

I spent a little time thinking about this today.
Then this PM I spena little time looking at search results for free inventory software. most of them seem to be teaser versions of more powerful programs to entice you to upgrade and buy so choosing the right one for free is important to start out in the presumption that there is a 50/50 chance you will want to move up eventually.
Given that, and knowing myself, I might be more likely to build my own. I have never taught myself spreadsheet or database skills but the basics don't seem too hard. Shucks, I've learned to navigate the internet and prospero for cryin' out loud so a little old spreadsheet couldn't be that much harder.
You've got it on your PC already. Just set up some columns for item, serial #, date pf purchase, purchase price, etc..

you could just throw it all in the same corner and then just dig for it ;^}
