This Christmas found me playing with the metaphor of light in making my gift for the love/light of my life. This picture doesn’t do them justice but I wanted to post it anyway. Everything is made from scratch except the electrical components. Each shade has 20 pieces of IPE to make the frames while the shade material is laminated (3 colors laminated with polyurethane) rice paper. After assembly, the shades got two more coats inside and out. The base and posts are finished with Tung Oil and the wound copper is another metaphorical touch not lost on my lover. Each lamp is rheostat controlled and create a really cool purple ambient light at lower levels. By the way, she really loved them…

They look nice- basically a mission style lamp?
How long did they take to make?
Looks great. Was there a pattern, or did they come from your head? I too am interested in the time frame.

Thanks guys. Like I said, they're much nicer in person... All told, mistakes, restarts, and all including designing as I went, I spent about 20 hours on the pair. The hardest part was milling out half lap joints on the shade parts. That time could now be about 8 hours since the learning curve was fairly intense dealing with such small parts and tight tolerances. It gave my boss some insight into what level of work I enjoy versus slapping decks together with him...
