Is it possible to buy an All Purpose Nailer? For 1.5 inch nails to > 3 1/4 inch nails?

TinyHouseCult | Posted in Tools for Home Building on July 27, 2018 05:27am

Hello!

I’m going to build Justin Fink/Rodney Diaz’s Heirloom Shed. It looks great.

In the videos I see Justin using a portable Gas powered Paslode for the 3 inch nails and what I think is a Bostitch Siding nailer with 1.5 inch nails.

As a novice and tool gathering I ran into the million and one nailers that exist. For everything.

I would like a nailer that reliably nails from 1.5 inch to 3 1/4 inch? Is that asking too much?

Other nice extras might be:

– Depth adjustment

– Gas powered

– Capable of firing round head (offset)

Advice appreciated!

    yeah...

Probably asking too much but I'm out of the loop on gas nailers. Most framing nailers handle from 2-3 1/4 or 3 1/2" nails. There are plenty of full round head nailers with depth adjustment, I never feel right not using a framing nailer with both those features. I like the bostitch because it is tool less depth adjustment, some require a wrench which usually results in depth not being optimized.

I bet you could adapt your plan to use 2" nail rather than 1.5". Beats buying 2 tools for one time use.

Thanks for the reply oldhand. I suspect you're right.

I was misled on a goose chase by the Bostitch F33PT  - it can fire a 1.5 (presumbly 4d? Not sure if head sizes are different between 1.5 hand driven nails and 1.5 inch nail gun nails) inch nail for metal connectors.

Neatly of course they don't come in stainless steel so I can't use it for my shingles.

      > I like the bostitch because it is tool less depth adjustment, some require a wrench which usually results in depth not being optimized.

I liked how the Bostitch sounded when I saw Justin using it in the videos - seemed like a very quiet gun. The Paslode seems powerful but makes a great racket.

      > I bet you could adapt your plan to use 2" nail rather than 1.5". Beats buying 2 tools for one time use.

I'm trying to figure that one out, I know I could modify the skip sheathing (shed project) so the extra 1/2 inch isn't visible through the skip sheathing but... it seems like the nail gun companies don't sell 2 inch stainless steel fastners for their framing nailers.

      The paw of conspiracy tugs!

Update: I've discovered the IM360CI - it looks like a European model of the Paslode accepts 50mm (2 inch) stainless steel nails.

      Thanks for the help! :-)

        maybe...

This is a radical thought but you could hand nail the 1 1/2" nails.

I think you mean reactionary ;-) but it's something I'm also seriously considering. The cost of nails looks to be much lower too.

The cost of nails and nail gun doesn't bother me as much as the notion that in 10 years time the nails for that gun I need might not be manufactured. I understand of course that they're very economical on larger builds.

Bit disappointed there's no universal nailer honestly - I don't see why the track/raceway for nails couldn't be a detachable module. Maybe in that science fiction future they keep telling me about.

detachable module in the hands of framers.....

            thats a good one.
