Greg Campbell writes a monthly column, ÖFF THE WALL, for Walls & Ceilings Magazine. His column for the February 1999 issue is entitled “EIFS’ACHILLES’HEEL?”
The article deals with the lack of quality in OSB by some manufacturers, and the moisture problem. Even if you are not into EIFS the article is worth reading. GeneL.

Not having access to the article I am just guessing here but are EIFS suppliers saying that the reason their systems are failing is because of the underlayment? The only reason I can see for this is that the EIFS system is allowing moisture to infiltrate and compromise the underlayment to begin with. I think that it has been well discussed here in this forum that moisture will damage any type of untreated wood if allowed to.
There are differences in the quality of OSB by manufacturer. There are also differences in Plywood by the manufacturer. So whats the difference? If a superior product is installed in an inferior manner or to support an inferior system it should not be blamed for the failure.
*When I read your title I thought, "oh no here we go for the 1,000,000th time."Oh darn, where did I leave my last copy of "Walls and Ceilings Magazine"? Wasn't it with the new "Journal of Drywall Mud"?Gene, you are, uh, a well-read man. Who were the best/worst manufacturers?
*andrew d. You don't need the magazine just go to their web page http://www.wconline.com. Manufacturers names were not given.Campbell quotes David Fyfe, CEO of Harris Speciality Chemicals which is the parent compnay of Senergy. Senergy is an EIFS manufacture and is one of the several manufacturers involved in class action suits. It was the only EIFS manufacturer to voluntarily settle the lawssuits against them. I thought all might find David Fyfe's comments on OSB interesting. GeneL.
