I am looking to purchase a belt sander and have been told Porter Cable is a good brand. Question is do you go with a 3″ or 4″ belt width and is variable speed necessity?

Glenn - Fine Woodworking and other such magazines do comparative surveys on a regular basis. You should be able to find an article like that by searching their web site.
One thing that might make a difference in which belt sander to buy is the optional equipment available. I've noticed some sanders can be fitted with a sled kind of device for flattening panels. Other considerations might be the dust bag effectiveness, the weight, comfort in your hands, noise, your proximity to a service center...
*I've used both the 352 and the 360 PC belt sanders ..... like them both ......in a shop environment. If you use them overhead, they are heavy. The Bosch is much lighter and I think a better choice for overhead work.
