Kind of a strange question but, has any one ever used a small table top planer to plane large size i.e. 8×8 or 10×10 . I was wondering if it would power its self down the wood . In other words if the wood was suported on one end could you start the planer and start it on the end of the wood and let it power its self down the piece as you moved the supports as the planer moved down the wood.

so sayeth the man who types with his toes
Ditto the bad idea
You gotta have a couple guys to handle the wood, and make sure the planner is clamped good to a sound support base.

Excellence is its own reward!
I read an article about post and beam construction where they put the planer on the beam and let it run the length of the beam, the feed rolls powering it along. It did not say how they started it on the beam or stopped it. It seems that should be easy to figure out. Sorry I don't remember where a saw this , it might have been JLC.
I think he's suggesting letting the planer "walk" down the beam as it is running while the wood is held stationary.
Yeah, I got that. Tried it once.

It's actually a good idea......
but a very bad result--by my personal experience.
If you have enough hands, and support the planer and have in/out feed that works, you can do this pretty easily though. Start wayy 'proud' though and eek down the thickness gradually b/c a member that size is likely to be inconsistent thickness.
At least use roller stands, but as others say, human help is better.
Scott.
Always remember those first immortal words that Adam said to Eve, “You’d better stand back, I don’t know how big this thing’s going to get.”
I'd find someone with a large planer-perhaps your community college has a wood shop...I used to do favours for folks who stopped by when I was
an evening instructor if they treated me right...
we like easy-there is someone in your area who has a large planer-and planing isn't espensive.
When in doubt, outsource.
cheers,

could it work? probably

New twist on the old belt sander races??????
I've done it solo on a 16' 6x10 SYP beam. Worked great. Probably not safe.
