I’m wondering if any of you know what the maximum spacing is from an island sink to the nearest wall. I’ve seen a lot of island sinks that are 50″ or more from the nearest wall. My contractor friend tells me that the drain vent, to be to code, can’t be more than 42″ from the sink, before it goes vertical. I need to know because I’m designing a kitchen, and this distance controls the size and placement of the island Thanks for your help. —geoff

If they are allowed by your local code, a studor (sp?) vent will allow the sink to be anywhere you want in relation to the stack. It is also called an air admittance valve.
You need to do an Island vent loop.
This is top secret advanced plumbing stuff!
ask a plumber who knows his #### about it and they should be able to show you the details.
If they don't know what you are talking about, then find another plumber!!
I will post a pic to give you a rough idea.
Really rough!!!
basically as the water goes down the air loops around behind it.
Wet head warrior should know of these.

View ImageThis is from http://www.codecheck.com buy the book. Getting the slope on the foot vent would determind the distance to the wall. Depth of main drain is the biggest factor.
one solution for island sinks that i see here in ontario, is to install the trap under the floor, this allows for regular venting
"air admittance valves" are not permitted here but can be bought(go figure)caulking is not a piece of trim
