Hello all,
I am looking to relocate my family to Madison, WI (near where my in-laws live) and am interested in connecting with a reputable, high quality renovation contractor. I am a finish carpenter and scenic artist (film and theater) with a lot of photographs of my work and references of employers and clients to back it up. I am over-educated and very presentable to your clients. And over 12 years in the trade has given me the skills to help you with your projects. I also have a lot of experience supervising crews and getting the most out of each worker. Please respond if you know of any high end contactors I should be contacting with my resume.
Sincerely,
Craig Brown

Craig-
I wish I could help you more directly. I am in the La Crosse area and just started working for a high end builder. I have some contacts in the area that may give me some direction for you. I'll see what I can do!
In the mean time, Best Of Luck!

Thanks for your reply,
Any leads you might have would be very helpful.

Craig,
I could have used you a couple years ago when I was doing that kind of work. I'm a remodeler in Madison, but I work for a company there now, rather than running it myself.
I hope you find what you want. I don't have much to say but there are some good jobs out there amidst all the bad ones. What is your specialty?
Hey Mad Dog!
How ya been? I haven't talked with you in a long time.
I'm graduating another football player this year, I've got his pic on the Proud Papa thread in the Tavern.
So you're an employed person now. Is it a real job? <G>
My appologies to scenicbuilder-I don't mean to hijack your thread. At least this should help bump it to the to top! ;-)John Svenson, builder, remodeler, NE Ohio
John,That's great about your boys. I think the Packers could use them after what they did on Sunday.Yep, I took on a real job. First time in 17 years of self employment, but it feels good to take some of the pressure off of sorting out good work from bad, collecting money and paying bills, filing paperwork, etc. I'm getting paid vacation days for the first time in my life. But I do have to do some work I would have passed on, though it's not a big deal. All in all, not a bad gig. How've you been doing? It sure has been a while. Who else is still around here?Good to see you. Talk more later,Dog
In the past as a freelancer and working on my 2 houses (an investment property and my own home), I have done everything myself (except electricity), from framing to sheetrock, as well as finish work (doors, molding, built-ins, cabinetry.) My training 13 years ago was a set designer for theater and film, and I have been working full-time for the last 10 years as a Charge Scenic Artist (painting backdrops, murals, faux-finishing, sculpting, etc.) and then running a remodeling business full-time (summer months) and then part-time during the rest of the year. I make a lot more money remodeling than working in theater, but I have health insurance for my family this way, so that is why I was thinking of loooking to work for someone else for a while until I can get set up in Madison for myself (or continue as an employee if the situation is good).
Part of my job as a scenic artist is supervising crews, sometimes as large as 15 artisans, and being responsible for all finished products on stage. So I guess I'm kind of a anal-retentive type person when it comes to finsh work. But I'd love to get into some high end-remodeling or new construction and really learn more about the business from a veteran.
Sorry to go on and on, just feeling anxious to get the show on the road......
Thanks for all your suggestions so far.
Craig
I don't know if you'd be interested in doing mostly kitchens and baths, but a lot of the work we do is high end with those as limitations, though sometimes we'll do full scale interior remodels and work on other trim elements. This week I'm finishing a 42 day bathroom job, a small kitchen redo and starting a custom site built cabinetry/mantel in some really cool new downtown condos.Write back if you'd like more info or email me: [email protected]Mad Dog
Craig,
There was a place called Architectural Building Arts, that was featured in one of the trade magazines a few years ago. Seemed like they had their act together, .....very high end stuff.
Otherwise try the Wisconsin Builders Association at http://www.wisbuild.org , Find the links to the Remodelors Council, or the Madison area builders association.
