Issues with 4000 table saw

jet | Posted in Tools for Home Building on January 2, 2008 08:21am

Hey folks.

Was ripping maple 2″ thick 6 feet long. Saw seemed to chatter then loose RPM’s.

Now the saw surges slow to fast. Turn the blade manually and I can hear a ticking noise. I checked the brushes and they are fine. Saw is a year and a half old.

Any one have a similar problem? Is it the motor/bearing? or could it be the soft start switch????

with the ticking noise I don’t think it is the switch.

I had similar issues, but they did not persist.  someone posted that the saw has some form of "governor/monitor" and when that was replaced, the saw worked great.  I cannot vouch for that, but when I start using mine again, I hope this does not become an issue again.  My saw would vary in speed, but would try to start and then just not start at all.  the last several times I ran it, there were no problems.  Does not instill confidence, but until it shows up more regularly, I can't do much.

The bearing siezed on my Bosch, but the motor kept turning the bearing, melting the bearing housing. May be a different situation, but I have reason to wonder about the durability of the bearings. My saw was two or three years old.

Just got back from the dealer....
Bearing gone.... Caused armature to arch.....replaced motor/bearings/brushes/outer coil/and speed control/$336.00Gonna talk to head office if maybe.... but dealer thinks I'm S.O.L. due to year and a half old.
Good thing is the dealer fixed while I waited.

And all this about the saw that many have proclaimed as the only jobsite tablesaw worth buying.

Use advanced search and find all the posts with the words "love" and "Bosch 4000" in them.  Use the boolean search routine.

Were you using a rip blade?I have that saw - mine is 6 years old or so - so far the only problem I've had is the base totally shattered on it with no reason or impact. Luckily, it only cost me $66 for a new base ( I had to put it on)I wouldn't let the service center do the talking for you - all they'll say is it's out of warranty and the rep will agree. You need to get on the phone with rep pronto (if it's not too late) and ride some case.Screw that - only 1 1/2 years old and you are spending $336 on a $450 saw!!I would not spend that to get one fixed - they're at Costco with the gravity stand for $459.But I guess if you had to have it that day, that's all that matters for the job.Good luck with it and still get on the reps butt about it.JT

so why did you post that to me???

            but since you asked...

I'd suspect pushing it too hard with the wrong blade installed or the blade being dull...

as far as the broken base goes... that's mechanical damage... it was hit, banged, dropped or dragged.. especially if it was cold.... that type of thing accumilates till it's all over..

Not to you - just didn't check the box. Also wasn't trying to rub anything in to the OP about the low pricing at Costco - just throwing it out there for other folks who may find themselves in a similar situation.JT

One thing that happened to mine is that one of the tabs got broke off that hold the blade insert in place. Something got dropped on the insert and it bent it and broke it and the tab broke off.Plus, my fence is getting a bit wonky - might need to go over it and check everything out.And over the years I've gotten glue and #### over the top from using it as an assembly table, so when I see the new ones in the store I get a bit envious. If you've not already seen them - myself and a few others have built router table inserts to fit into the space between the extension and main table - if you'd like to see pics, let me know.Julian

Just on an outside chance if it was purchased with a CCard maybe it had the auto extended warranty coverage? Check to be sure.

After your reply I got to kinda thinking? So I started looking and that extended warantee is something I'm gonna hunt up   more info on.

I had kinda forgotten about it so now to search out what cards I can use to get it. If I could get the extra year on top of 2 for Bosch batteries that would be Yowsa. Or the flat screen I just got.

Plus for my first try searching(like 30minutes) it is fairly? obtuse to find.

Amex is showing good but ? yearly fee, City Gold /PlatinumMaster card, and Visa Signature and business are carrying it.

          13. JulianTracy | Jan 05, 2008 06:52pm | #19

The Bosch batteries have a tiered 3 year warranty - between the 2nd and 3rd years, the service centers will sell you brand new 18 volt blu-core batteries for $42 each. Amex is worth the yearly fee - their warranty extension service is painless - They've refunded my complete purchase price for a $600 LCD moniter that was out of the 3 year man. warranty, a $269 DVD burner and a $300 (at the time) 1GB Compact Flash format IBM micro-drive.If you are a Costco member - buy any electronics you need there as Costco themselves automatically extends the warranty service to 2 years and also handles/provides a free 24/day, 7day/week phone technical support. And, if you get the Costco Amex card, the $55 year monthly Amex fee is also your Costco membership fee so it's a wash, and it gives you a cash back each year based on your spending. Every year I get at least $60-200 back and a few years I got $300-500 back.Julian

I would take it back to Costco and talk to them. They do got a pretty good return policy

          15. ClaysWorld | Jan 06, 2008 11:58pm | #21

            Thanks good info.

I went to citibank gold to check and It has it on it but when I went to the phone prompts I for got to bring my lawyer. And that was just to check terms and conditions, so I can imagine if it was a claim.

Also saw the bosch vac addapt on a different thread- Cool. I was gonna comment and show a picture of my invention but didn't want to get to beat up.

And it's a big example why your so much a better ? then me. So Let me m explain, It's a paint can with a dismantled 18 v bosch battery in it. And I can't get it to do any thing.
