I am starting the process of finding someone to replace the roofing on my 1912 home. The current roof has lived a full and happy life and is now ready for retirement. It is one layer of asphalt shingles over plywood installed 16 years ago. The roof is having some minor flashing problems. I was looking into the fake slate roofing (Owens-Corning and Authentic roof) are the two I have looked into. I have found some write ups but have not read or spoken with anyone who could give an objective opinion. My other concern was the lack of companies that have actually installed these type products here in southern Delaware. What should I look for? I have had one estimate so far and I found it very confusing. The Mira Vista fake slates are approx. $350. + per square and a good asphalt ranged but was well below half the cost of the fake slate. The estimate he gave said the cost would only be $900 less if I went with asphalt. I admit to knowing very little about roofing so I am at a loss.
I was hoping to gather some first hand knowledge of quality slate like products and pluses and minuses. I would also like to ask the right questions.
Thank you for your assistance.
