I don’t know if I follow completely but a couple variants of an inkline are the first that comes to mind. One works identically to a chalk line, the other, perhaps more japanese version, I think you actually roll that thing. Now that I say it . . . check out the japan woodworker. They’ll have pics of their wares and you can see if thats what it is. http://www.japanwoodworker.com

Try an accoustical tile ceiling supplier......they should have it....
anybody know what I'm talking about?
Yes, and it was called Jet Line. But I haven't seen it in a while - not sure where to get it. Braided fishing line is very light and strong, and I think could fill the bill. Some folks replace the line in their chalk box with it as well.
A 60' barrel ceiling - I'm guessing a laser wouldn't do the job...
Jet line is what electricians use to blow (or suck) through conduit so they can pull in a larger string, then pull in the wires. Check with an electrical supply house.
The string used to layout commercial drop ceilings will also work.

I've had a spool of sometype string for several years... yeah it's that big... i think it came from a shoe factory for sew'n soles or something... i've had more than a few guys cut their hands think'n they'd break it... had some outside in the sun & rain for months and it was still tight.... kinda reminded me of sail thread? as far as i know we've never snapped any just by pull'n it... so maybe if ur in an area that sells sail thread...

Jet Line is the name. It is difficult to find so whenever I do I buy 5 rolls. Maybe that is why it sells out so fast.
I was in a fishing sporting goods store the other day and picked up some 65lb test line. It is green and sells for about $10 for 450'. Comes on a spool too. The jet line wraps on itself and is basically a one shot deal. I think the price is equivalent. need a razor/ knife to cut it though.
BTW - I bought the fishing line to use as my chalk line. I figured from what I have been reading here that I would get crisper chalk lines. I'll let you know.

My acoustical ceiling supplier has boxes of jet line on their counter.
A tip we learned in apprentice school was to use dental floss.
