jig for cabinet hardware installation

5brown1 | Posted in General Discussion on December 8, 2005 05:15am

Anyone have an idea on making a jig to install the pulls on cabinet doors or a way to be sure they are all identically drilled? Do you remove the doors first?

Stay tuned for our next issue...we show a jig for hanging cabinet doors in the one of the articles.

If your need is more immediate (isn't it always?) - try Kreg, I think they have some cabinet hardware jigs.

If you're just worried about the pulls, HD sells a plexiglass jig (made I think by Liberty Hardware) that may do the job.  For hinge jigs it will depend on the hinge style you're using.  For Euro style cup hinges Blum and Kreg both make jigs.  For pulls, I often make a jig from a box top (shoe boxes work great) where I open up two adjacent sides of the box so that the remaining closed corner orients the box top on the door corner and then I punch two small holes where I want the screw holes to fall.

I use a cheap jig from rocklers. I dont buy much from them but they do have a few jigs that work pretty good and are inexpensive. Ill try to find a link.

If you posted another thread about this, I referred to a Blum jig, available at HD and other stores. It has one jig for the hinges and one for pulls and knobs. For pulls and knobs, you could drill without removing the doors if you can keep the drill and door stable enough.

For knobs and handles an easy way is a pc of 1/2 ply about 4" x6" ..add L shaped "fences" on each face ( this is so it it is flippable for L and R doors...) hot melt glue or brads will hold 1/2x1/2 rips.

Drill the first door freehand and THEN use the door as a jig to locate the hole in the jig, I always drill a 3/16th hole for the 8-32 knob and handle screws.

I hope that is clear enough..oh, the fences register on the door egde and bottom or top depending if it is a wall cab or floor cab.

For drawers I make a similar jig that centers the pulls, but I don't ALWAYS make the handle the same distance from the top edge of a drawer front..just center the plate sideways and clamp it at the elevation you desire on the drawer face.

edit: NO do NOT remove the doors for drilling, WAY too easy to screw up the handle / pull location...have them hanging in PLACE.

Just finished up installing pulls on new kitchen cabs. Used the attached jig. One side for left doors and turn it around for right doors. With the holes going all the way through, it prevented too much tearout when the drill went through. I just lined the bottom/top of the jig up with the top/bottom of the rail, dependent on upper or lower cabinets.

By using plywood and a standard drill bit, by the time I got to the 20th pull, the holes were just starting to get a little sloppy. That being said, this is a one-time-use jig. But how often is every project the same?

Rockler sells one.  Go to their site and see whether it will work for you.

A more exotic and versatile (and expensive) rig can be had by checking out the offering at the Woodworkers Hardware site.

Check Rockler -- they sell jigs for darn near everything.

Make your own because the store-bought ones will not always work. For example, the stiles are not always the same width and sometime the edge profile will throw things off so the hole in the jig is not centered on the stile. I know someone will say they have multiple holes but then the holes they give you are just for a pencil or a punch. You can make own that has a larger hole in it, ( the diameter of the outer sleeve of a vix-bit) and then you can clamp or hold the jig and drill it in one step.

Most of the Rockler jigs are designed for Vix bits.

    You said for pulls.

Go to spheres post and re-read.66837.6

You dont need to buy anything, I make one like what sphere described everytime I install the pulls and then pitch it.
