Jim,
In your article on trimming windows in FH (3/2001, #137) you had some pinch clamps for miters and returns that you recommended. I would like to order some but have a question for you.
At the Peck Tool website, they say that the small size are for moldings up to 5/8″ wide, and the larger clamps are for moldings up to 1″ wide. Which do you use, and do you have any other tips as to usage, order amounts for both, etc.
Thanks.

Jon - I am just checking the board quick before racing out with my daughter for an appointment so I can't take time to google this, but try to find the website for Dave Collins, the same guy who invented the Collins Coping Foot. He sells the same size small hand held spring clamps I have. I also use some larger "C" shaped spring clamps that I open with a pliers-like tool for bigger miters. I'm pretty sure I bought that set from Rockler. I have about a dozen of each.
I generally use spring clamps for paint grade miters. I don't like having the extra hole in stain or oiled woodwork. If I remember right, they were mentioned in that trim article as a method for holding "Dutchmen" in while the glue dries - more often I use blue masking tape, or real short brads for that task.
Sorry to be short, gotta go mix it up with Seattle commuters. Blech.

i just bought some and they are great. i got the pliers, too, but not sure if they are worth the $...
I use these and like the way they hold the work during glue up and swing out of the way to pin the joint. The clamps and the pliers (spread apart type) are not cheap, but I would get 10-12 clamps if you plan on doing several casing joints, which I know you are. They help me trim better. The clamps are like a third hand.

So are you just going to tease us, or tell us where we can get those clamps? They look like something I've got to have. EliphIno!
I tell you what. I'll donate the set I recommend and put em up for auction at http://quittintime.infopop.cc/ubbthreads/categories.php?Cat=. If you can't stand the suspense, I'll try to go to my supplier and get em on order or p/u a set tomorrow. I will come back and tell you the brand/price/and availability (my tool supplier would be glad to ship to you I'm sure). I'll look for another application and post it now if I have one. It's one of those things that I thought about for quite awhile then finally did it, kicking myself for taking so long. Another simple great invention.__________________________________________

It appears to me the clamps that Calvin is using are the same ones at http://www.collinstool.com
They are priced pretty reasonably (about $2.50 each, with the pliers {optional, but I'm thinking they will be very nice} for $15). http://www.pecktool.com has a high zoot boxed set, but it's considerably more pricey, but with more size options.
Calvin, I hope I haven't stolen your auction hopes.

No sir buddy, if anything you give it more chance for bids. These are not meant to be bargain auctions, rather a way to reward donations. Check it out.__________________________________________

Those clamps and the pliers look similar to an item I saw a coupla times at a feed store- 'hog rings', or some such. I'm not a farmer or a 4-H'er, so who can shed some light on this?
