I’m attending my first JLC Live show in a couple weeks. I got a promo mailing from Chief Architect indicating they would be selling their product at an ‘attractive’ price there.
This leads me to ask: are there a lot of other ‘deals’ there – specifically, do the various manufacturers run special sales of their tools at the show?
Thanks, Bill.

bill... you bet they do.... this is a big trade show.... really oriented to the pros...
bring your money if you want deals... leave it home if you can't resist bargains..
BTW... i've use Chief since '97..

Thanks for the reply Mike - I've read your posts re Chief - that's one of the main reasons I've decided to buy it. I'm hoping the discount they are offering at the show is substantial.
How do you manage the logistics of buying tools at the show? Just keep schlepping them out to the car, then back for another load? I'm really gearing up these days so I think I'll be buying quite a few, including large items like compressor, nail guns, etc.
Thanks, Bill.
Hey Bill,
Hope I'm not interrupting here, but I just can't help myself when it comes to JLC-LIVE. First time for me was last year in RI. I had a flippin' blast! Bunch of us went down and got hotel rooms for the weekend, ate good, drank good, bought lots of tools and stuff.....what more could a guy want?
Most of the vendors will hang on to your purchases for you to pick up at the end of the day. More than one armload and you'll be making a coupla trips at the end of things. Not sure if they would arrange to ship to you rather than cash and carry. One things....most vendors won't take checks for obvious reasons so either bring a knot or the plastic.
This year I'm going down on Thursday to do Gary Katz's all day intensive. Friday will be for browsing. Can't hardly wait.
Thanks for the info - sounds like it will be just what I was hoping for. They should have all the BTers wear special hats or something so we can look for each other.
I live pretty close to Prividence so I won't be staying over, but I intend to spend all of Friday, and Saturday if necessary to take it all in.
See ya there ... Bill.
bill... a lot of the stuff i've bought is take with.. but some of it gets shipped after the show..
the first booths you hit are the ones with the best shopping bags
at noon Friday, my crew and i will be shlepping up the hill to Angelo's.. hope you'll join us
a lot of the tool mfr's have local dealers in RI .. like Quaker Lane Tool.. and you can usually work out a deal to get the show discount and pick up your tool later.. if you want...
sides .. it's easier to get it into the house with out getting too many inquiriesMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Thought I'd bump this up to the top and see who else is attending next week's show in Providence. I know Mike Smith and Bill W will be there, but who else is going? I'm heading down Thursday AM for Gary Katz's seminar and staying until Saturday sometime. Less than a week to go!

I'm finally going after planning to go for the last two years and having things come up at the last minute. I'll just be going Friday and Saturday, but am looking forward to the seminars and any beer drinking/storytelling that may be going on Friday night.
I'll be in JLC's booth until 5 on Friday- don't forget about me when the beer drinkin' and story tellin' arrangements get made.....
Bob
I'm in. But I don't know how long to go for. I think Friday, for sure. I understand the seminars are cool.
Sounds like a good time, never been to one. I understand that there is a shingling seminar and Guertin is doing it. I'd like to attend that one. I really don't know anyone, but his name rings a bell!
I think Mike Smith and Piffin should do some seminar. ;)
I'd entertain any advice on what/where to go....Jake Gulick

jake... i've signed up for some of the marketing extra-pay seminars in the past.. well worth while.. the problem for me is that you can't cover the floor of the show in one day if you go to seminars...
also .. they have demos scheduled all day long on the floor.. that you can pop in and out of...
if you have two days. by all means sign up for some of the extra-pay seminars...
but there sure is a lot to take in right on the floorMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Ill be there on friday. I'm looking for a show special on a 5 HP table saw. single phase left tilt Delta or Powermatic. what are the odds?
Mav,
I don't recall hearing about either Delta or Powermatic being represented at the show. If anyone knows, Gary will. Last year's big tool manufacturers at the show were Bosch, Stanley/Bostich, and MaxUSA. Those were the big three that I remember. Most tools offered for the most part were jobsite tools and not shop tools. I'm sure you'll find plenty of stuff the max out the plastic on.
look up Quaker Lane Tool ...they'll be the local rep for a lot of the mfr'sMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
hope to see a bunch of you tomorrow at the show....

Hey Mike,
I'm in Providence at the Marriot across the street from the Convention Center right now. Went to Gary Katz's "Success with your finish carpentry business" all day seminar today.
In a word...AWESOME
Learned about the three main Classical Orders of Architecture.
Then some helpful, down to earth business advice regarding contracts, using Excel, bidding etc.
The second half of the seminar was tips and techniques. Saw lots of handy miter saw jigs, new products, and lots of great time saving tips to improve both efficiency and the quality of work.
The best part of the whole presentation had to be Gary's attitude. Very laid back and comfortable. It was like being able to pick his brain for 6 hours without having to ask a single question. He teaches what he actually does rather than what just looks good on tv. It was good to hear solutions regarding everyday jobsite conditions that are less than perfect on even the best sites. Real solutions to real problems. Not like the crap on TV where all they show you is the "gravy".
Also got to see lots of slides of Gary and crew in action. Man, they bang out some beautiful work.
Picked up Gary's new DVD on the way out...25% off.
I had a blast at last year's show, but this one seems like it's even better than that. Can't wait to hit the floor tomorrow. Hope I bump into you. I'll be on the lookout.
Look for the green John Deere hat and an ear to ear grin full of Copenhagen....that'll be me.
i figger we'll be there around 9 when they open.... cruise the floor.. harrass bob kovacs and mike guertin, rick arnold....
check in with Chief Architect...

Will you guys be wearing company shirts?
if i can find some ... been a busy week.. the company hats and shirts are a little ratty after a long winter.. gotta dig up up some new dudsMike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Well, who went and what'dya think?
I tried to get there Friday early, but with I-95 being closed a mile from my house, it took ALOT longer. I had business Friday nght in Auburn MA, so I just stayed over and did Sat as well. Glad I did. Got a great deal on a truck rack.
The presenters on the floor that I saw were great. I spent time at Mike's "Shingle Show", and Garys trim seminars, and got something from both that made the trip a success, and lots more. Nice guys too.
AND, I ordered the new Bosch jobsite radio/charger/cd player/ extention quad box that I've been trying to get since January.
Compared to the Vegas show, this was all about hands on learning and tools. The Vegas show was about stuff.
If there's one in your neighborhood, attend!

I looked for you Mike, but didn't see anybody with Mike Smith on their shirts!
A question for anybody who noticed:
What was the (supplied) compressor that I saw at all the set ups? Low, dual pressure (120/350 psi) and...QUIET! it was cool! I meant to get the name, but didn't...Jake Gulick

I dunno about Mike and Rick, but I didn't get any harassment- didn't even get a hello.....lol.
I thought I spotted you walking around once, but when I turned back to look again, you were gone.
Oh, well- there's always next year.

Not sure where I'll be in August- but if I'm still in Jersey, it's a distinct possibility.
Bob

diesel, try to buy gary a beer. If he goes for more, I'll buy. Nice guy, send him regards.
Bill, be ready for a bunch of places to sign up for drawings, you could get lucky. In the show floor clinics, don't forget to participate, they throw all sorts of things your way, and make fun of you if you're lucky. There'll be many opportunities to pick up samples, you'll look like a pack mule. The clinics presented on the floor are worth the trip. I spent two days at the columbus show and didn't see it all. Look up the clinics you're interested in and plot them on the show program.
I would wait until leaving b/4 loading the truck. Don't know providence at all, but no need tempting. Be cream of the crop pickings for a tool theif.

Jeez, Calvin, not more BEER! I'm still trying to finish the one from last time....
Gary
Alright gary, maybe they won't take you to a "dive" bar.
If anyone can get him to a swanky place, I'll spring for a nice Merlot.
Do they have a libation hour planned as they did in Columbus? That was a good time.Remodeling Contractor just outside the Glass City.

Yes. Friday afternoon, usually starts right when the show ends. I'll be there! Drinking...

So where's this shindig after the show on Friday? I didn't get my invitation.....
Bob
Sorry Bob, I had the JLC staff look up your name and some kind of red flag came up...
It's open to everyone. Usually it's in a large room right near the convention hall, at 5:00 on Friday. They give out two 'tickets' for drinks or something at the door? I can't remember. Look me up. If it costs $ I'll buy.
Gary
Damn..that flag's still popping up? What happened to the 7-year statute of limitations???? lol
I'm sure I'll find you during the show- probably covered with sawdust and tangled up in extension cords....
See you then,
Bob
someone said they were thinking of buying Chief Architect at JLC..
well, i got a flyer from my software dealer who will be at JLC in booth 1235... ( Berryvale ).. he says there will be a VERY good deal on Chief..... but he isn't allowed to say what the deal will be...
Steve Blake will also have 2 guest presenters there too... a buidler/designer from CT...and a designer from the Cape, Jay Malaspina... i've seen Jay's work... excellent..Mike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
Be sure and stop by JLC's booth Friday afternoon- I'll be there from around 3:30 to 5- I'll be floating around the floor before that, and doing a quick one-hour seminar on the floor on Spreadsheet Estimating Basics on Saturday (noon I think).
I better see you too, Mike!!!
