Thanks for thinking of me Jeff, but I rarely have time during the day at these shows. Typically, I have an hour for lunch and half of that is spent talking to attendees or setting up the next clinic. But if anybody wants to grab a beer or dinner either night, email. I'd enjoy seeing most of you. <G>Andy

Ok, here is what we have, so far...Thursday. 13th of november. 5:00pm.Be there or be... missing out on meeting some pretty cool people. The conferences run wednesday through saturday. The exhibitions, (what some get the free admission to.), are only on friday and saturday. 5:00 gives a bit of time after the conferences, for people to get to wherever it is that we meet.~~~Restaurants...I have no idea what is good around the convention center.I see:The uninon square grill.La Creperie Voila.Moby's RestaurantUnconventional PizzaCheesecake FactoryVerona Pizza & PastaAdiamo Restaurant & ItalianDaily Grill:Those with a web presence seem expensive.Does anyone know aything about any of these restaurants ?What we need is a place that will fit a group of us without having to have a reservation... Inexpensive. Good food. Fairly close. And comfortable. Gotta get that in there.Gameworks is too loud. I want to be able to hear the conversation without having to ask people over and over again, what they said...

          14. mathewson | Oct 22, 2008 04:21am | #46

Went around on Sunday to look at places which might work. The Roosevelt Hotel which is just down from Gameworks looks good. The prices are modest for the area and there are several rooms of various sizes so we most likely can have a room to ourselves.

How will they handle it, if we just show up, unannounced ?We may have a "group" of two... Or we may end up with a gang of 5 or more...As I understand it...I am going to make every effort to be there at 5:00 pm.There may be a couple of others who will show up right away, or even early. Then there might be stragglers. If stragglers show up, we pretty much need to be sitting where they can see us, or they'll give up and leave. (I know of at least two who have done THAT as well, in the past two years. LOL)

            Luka | Oct 22, 2008 09:01pm | #52

I should have thought of this before. We are looking for a quiet pub/restaurant type place, not just square footage.;o)And certainly not square footage we have to pay for. LOLDoes this hotel have that, or is it just a 'conference' type room, with possible 'room service' from the hotel ?~~~The union square grill is out, for me. 42 dollars for enough food to starve a sparrow ? I don't think so...

The place is more like a pub than a hotel restaurant. The rooms are just dining areas, not conference rooms. I'll call tomorrow to confirm.

It looks like there are a couple who can only make it on friday. But most can make it on thursday.So...What time thursday evening/night ?And since you've spent more time around the convention center than I have, do you have any recommendations for a good place for all of us to meet ?~~~If I can make it back in there on friday, for lunch, I'd like to try to meet the ones who cannot be there on thursday.

          22. andy_engel | Oct 15, 2008 02:44pm | #40

There's always a free-beer get together after the show on Thursdays, somewhere in the convention center. Last year it was in the skybridge. How about we meet there?Andy

Curious if you've attended any of the conferences at JLC Live and whether you thought they were worthwhile. I've attended the midwest show this year and last- just the exhibit hall. Could be wrong but it seemed like their were fewer people than last year. Some new exhibitors this year and others absent that were there last year. Pressed for time this year- spent but a few hours but I hope next year to spend a lot more time taking in the clinics and conferences. The Azek folks were there with their decking line........ new to me. I liked the looks of it  and the screw and plug system seemed to work well.

The Minneapolis show was smaller than last year. It's the economy. The look out for Seattle is better than this year's Minneapolis show, though.Andy

Go to deckmagazine.com and check the back issues. It's free. I wrote an article on flashing ledgers. The details aren't very different. Email questions.Andy

            Dave,

I know this year is going to be short for us.  We'll probably only be there Friday and I might be the only one who goes out of the crew.

I know Mike Guertin won't be there, so I'm thinking its going to be a small expo.

Maybe we should come up with some sort of hand signal to identify who we are.You know, like the crips and bloods.;o)I think pretty much everyone knows what I look like. AAAARRGGHHHH !!!!Ok, first the good news. I picked Andy E up at the airport today, and delivered him to his hotel in Seattle. We had some pizza, talked a bit, then I came home. Now the bad news.Nearly 4 hours later, I am finally home.Along the way, my transmission went out.I am 99 percent certain that an impellor broke in the torque convertor. That's better than the tranny itself going out. Gotta admit. Still, it is a repair that I cannot afford. And even if I could... in these circumstances there is no way I could have it fixed and on the road again in time to be there thursday.I am going to try to borrow transportation. No one lives out this way, for me to catch a ride with.If I can't borrow transportation I will not be able to make it there.=0(

So far, no luck in borrowing a vehicle. To add insult to injury, the river has been above flood stage for a while, already, and today it is much higher. Already threatening the road.Still raining a solid sheet out there. Been that way all night. And we have a major windstorm happening as well.So I may disappear for a while... (power outage.)

The question of transportation is now moot. This is just incredible. In 2006, I missed the JLC Live get together, because my road was washed out by a flood. That year, the river had crested at 28 feet above flood level.~~~The river has already reached near that level. The road is already partially washed out, and is impassible.And... The river will not crest until sometime around ten am tomorrow, and they expect it to crest at 32 feet above flood level. So, it's deja wet all over again...So far I still have power.I have groceries for a couple of weeks. I have propane to cook with.If the power goes out, I have books to read, but will be without heat. I have a small propane heater, but do not have enough propane for both heat and cooking. Cooking warms you from the inside, and you gotta eat anyway, so cooking wins.Depending on how long the power is out, (IF it goes out.) I may lose what is in the freezer, again.Other than that, aside from a tree falling over and crushing my trailer and me... I should be fine.Just stuck, that's all.The rain is slowing down.Another big difference this year is that we only have had one major storm with high winds and all that, so far. So with luck I won't lose power, either.

before you post it, ask yourself this question: Would my grandma twist my ear off for saying that? If the answer is yes, ditch it.

I'll be at the Roosevelt tomorrow (Thursday) evening, trying to spot whoever else is there. Spending Friday at the show.

            Roll call?

I'll be at the Roosevelt also. See you then.

I'm sorry you guys, I can't make it tomorrow.

As you know the winds blew wild and the rain fell hard last night and today and we still aren't ready for the roofer.  We'll be framing and sheathing dawn to dusk, then again Friday trying to get buttoned up once and for all.

But a guy who works with me might be there.  He's attending a session all day and tonight I told him about the get together.  He's really a good guy.  Known him since he was 7.  Bobby.  28, nice smile, sandy hair, 5'11, 200lbs.  You guys will like him.

Anyways, sorry to miss again this year.  I was really looking forward to my sessions and seeing you both again, along with anyone else who shows.  First round's on me next time we get together.

PlumbBill said he'd really like to do a mini-fest thing, as well.

He has to work 4pm to 1:30am, on friday.

So a mini-fest on friday, is out for him, as well.

I think he could make it on thursday.

So far we have Junkhound, Blodgett, Timuhler, harryvermehren, and myself as possibles for friday.

PlumbBill, myself, Blodgett and AaronRosenthal as possibles for thursday.

    Am I missing anything ?

Good.I'm not going to be able to drive out there on both thursday and friday, get a meal, etc...Otherwise I'd suggest we have lunch on both days. That way, we'd get to meet more people. LOLAndy has 4 shows thursday, one on friday, and he isn't going to be able to make any 'mini-fests', at all.

I am pretty sure I can come Thursday... count me as 80%. I just had to travel outta town on short notice and it burned a lot of money. If not Gameworks, where?

I'm not familiar enough with the area, to know what is available. If there is something like a red robin nearby, that would work...

I'll be there for most days of the show & would like to join any of those interested in lunch or dinner on any/all of the days. Being from Seattle can give a list of resturants if interested.

Yes, please, on the list of places. When Andy gives us a time, that will give us a starting point for the planning.I don't think anyone is going to want to walk half the city to get to dinner. So someplace close is best. (Hell, two blocks and I'll have to rest half an hour.)Someplace where the other patrons will not be looking down their noses at the unruly carpenters. A place where we can shove a couple tables together. Etc.Oh, and we don't want to have to rent the pig out, to have enough money for the meal...

    My own schedule has changed.

Looks like I'll be there thursday, and possibly saturday.

    1. davidmeiland | Oct 22, 2008 06:23am | #47

Since you are suggesting a change from Gameworks, I hope you come up with something else, or the whole thing might tank. The last two years have been at Gameworks and I don't think has been a problem, although it's not a quiet place. Most restaurants are not set up to let an indeterminate number of people come and go from a group. What happened to the local guy who was going to suggest somewhere else?

        Luka | Oct 22, 2008 07:57am | #48

I think he just did.;o)I'll be the first to admit, I didn't go because it was at gameworks.Too much noise. Too much stress. It's a recipe for a panic attack.I know of three others as well, who have missed one of the last two years, because it was at gameworks. If we decide on someplace different, I'm hoping you'll be there, regardless.=0)

Hotel for the get together on thursday. (Or wherever we do finally have the get together. Gotta ask a couple more questions of Mathewson.)Convention center on saturday. Probably the last half of the day. And probably mostly sitting my fat arse in a chair in Andy E's demonstration area.

I talked to the people at the Roosevelt Hotel today. They were very accommodating, we can pull tables together as needed or if there are enough of us we can use one of the back rooms.

Most excellent !So, 5:00 PM thursday at the Roosevelt Hotel.Roosevelt Hotel
        1531 7th Ave, Seattle, WA
206-621-1200Looks to me like we can leave the convention center and walk directly north on 7th street. And it looks like about two and a half blocks.~~~Anyone... How has this worked before ? Just station someone noticeable near the entrance, and hope that whomever shows up recognizes them ?Or just take tables/seats, and hope the group can be seen from the entry ?
