for the un-ending Fir door job. Yep, I’m still working on that job, at this point it’s small add-on stuff and technical support. But there’s more to come before it’s over.
One pic is the breakfast room porch entrance this morning. The place will be opened as a B&B
Still have quite a few doors to hang, They haven’t begun in the basement yet, or hung doors like the pocket doors and dbl-swing kitchen doors. Still a bunch of trim yet, too.
I didn’t do any installation, just pre-made the trim and pre-hung the doors in my shop.
The guys doing the work are two local carpenters, Jim-Bob and Jim(for real). Both are top-notch craftsmen.
Another project I took on was to make and install parts for the stair cases(2). I had to turn a bunch of ballusters to replace broken or badly replaced ones, re-create a few feet of hand&foot rail, and make a hollow post to cover a steel rod supporting the altered 2nd fl. stairwell. Well, plus some other trim that I’m waiting for stock delivery on.
Can you pick out the new ballusters?
Second floor, with post(I didn’t put the steel rod there, just hid it :^} ). Also a short length of rail I had to add. the post is VGFir, lockmitered, chamfered&lamb’s tounges. That was a trick to do in the shop, then assemble on site.
It’s going to be quite a shack when it’s finally done. Thanks for looking.

Thanks. If you mean the paneling, yes, it's a random mix of Chestnut,Oak and Ash. I had to replace some missing parts, and a general re-nail&spruce up.
can't tell too much from the pic, but I always liked that look..ash is the best sub. for chestnut, IMO.

Thanks for the pics. It all looks like top quality work. I am assuming the woodwork is cherry? Having the parts made by a quality guy makes it sooo much easier to install in the field!
Great job

The trim work is all Fir, to match what was there originaly.
The place is up in Fleischmann's in Delaware Co.,NY, and the owners are from Manhatten(sp)
Sphere, the next best match(after Ash) I've seen for Chestnut would be Catalpa. A little stain and you can'y tell the diff until you cut it.
BTW - If you force the flash on a digital camera, it will give you more detail on shots that are backlit...Anyone who thinks old age is golden must not have had a very exciting youth.
Catalpa IS good stuff, I was making solid body guitars from it in NC (where I had a decent mill/supplier) but when my shop fire hit, I lost it all. No one near here seems to cut it, and it is not as plentiful.
I need to send you some of this brown ash, I have from David Doud..a few pcs. for ya to actually play with...IT is closest to chestnut I have EVER seen.
Email me a phys. addy I can share a few hunks. As Doud says.."there is enough for everyone"..

Thanks for the fotos Dave, and nice work.
You're in Ulster County or there abouts if I recall? Can you tell us where this is. My wife and I have become quite friendly with the owners of B&B in New Paltz.........I'm wondering if they might know these owners.
Can you tell us about the windows? What is that style of mullion called?
Thanks again for sharing.
Eric
Nice looking work, I really like the door trim. I'm a sucker for the big Federalist style door cornices. I like the elongated 4 panel doors, nice change of pace from the 6panels I see in residential everywhere and the 2panel commercial doors that are the rage now.

In the picture you call "trimwork" -
Is there a name for that particular style of trim? (The horizontal part above the door)
That's what I have in my older house. Just never knew what to call that particular style.
A good time to keep your mouth shut is when you're in deep water.
All I've ever konown it to be called is "Head case(ing)". I guess it could be called a capitol also.
