Jobsite Cell Phones

user-86517 | Posted in Tools for Home Building on February 7, 2006 07:49am

I’ve currently got a killer cell phone that I love. It’s a Nextel i580. http://nextelonline.nextel.com/NASApp/onlinestore/en/Action/DisplayPhones?audience=INDIVIDUAL&id12=Personal_Wireless;Phones&language=EN It is the best cell phone I’ve ever owned. It takes abuse. It has a speakerphone. It has an exterior caller ID. It is voice activated. It hasd GPS. It regrouts shower surrounds and installs insulation in crawlspaces. The only problem is that the Nextel plans out here are about twice as much as comparable Verizon plans. Since I don’t use the Direct Connect feature that often, I wouldn’t mind saving some cash and switching cell phone carriers. My question is this: What phone do you have that is geared for a jobsite? I think the most important featurs are durability, a good quality speakerphone, a large phonebook capacity, and an exterior caller ID. Tell me what works for you.

I'd add good reception at the job site to the list.  I haven't had a cell phone in years, for me they were so hard to hear and understand that they just became glorified beepers.  Any recommendations on a rugged phone with good coverage?

Whoops meant to address to the orginal poster but missed...  Looking back at your post, I will say my phone has better reception then most other carriers, however that is going to be determined by your location, Seeing as I'm 30 min from Sprint's World HQ, I'd expect them to have great coverage.

I have a Sanyo RL 7300 through sprint, it has a lot of the same features at the heavy duty Nextels, it has the walkie talkie feature but no one else on Sprint has it so I've never used it.  It has everything I wanted, speaker phone and a calculator and NO camera, I never saw the point in camera phones...

It's a flip phone which was the only thing I didn't like about it but have become used to it.

Before this I had another Sanyo, it was put through hell and back and finally died after about 3 years of abuse.

The best feature of the Sanyo phones is the battery life, they last long and recharge quick, I don't know if that is something specific to Sanyo.

Some of the plans Sprint offers can be reasonable, mine however, is not, which is nothing but a function of the amount of minutes I burn in a month.

Well mine needs charging more then once a week, but I also spend about 3200 minutes a month, so it's a lot of use

Mine was dropped into a glass of water and  came back to life.

Two days after I bought it, it was on the dash of the truck, my loving wife put a cup of water in the cup holder, phone slid off the dash and swooshed into the glass, not a hint of rim either, it was a beautiful clean shot...

It was only in there for a split second before I picked it out and a day later I turned it back on and it worked fine, I was impressed as I just paid $200 for it and did not want to go back and buy a second one two days later.

That Sanyo 7300 looks pretty built. How's the speakerphone: Tin can or THX Theatre with surround sound?--Andy

somewhere in between, I can usually hear people just fine, they can not always here me.

The range in volumne on the phone is great, I can get it down to a whisper in my ear or loud enough to hear holding it 6"-12" away from my head.

Is this the phone?  I buy the cheapest ones I can, and they seem to last just as long.  I had a $39 Nokia for about 3 years.  My current Samsung was $49, and it's going strong after 1 year.

No, the phone I currently have is this one:http://www.myrateplan.com/cool_phones/972/Nextel/Motorola_i560/Great phone, spendy plans.

  3. IdahoDon | Feb 09, 2006 03:24am | #4

The Motorola flip phones from a few years ago were pretty tough and I had good luck with keeping mine in a front pants pocket for everything from framing to finish.

My phone antena breaks so I figure just get a new plan and new low-end Motorola flip phone.  The phone worked for about a month and now sits in a hard plastic container since body sweat corroded the contacts to the battery and the charging connections.  The phone is unreliable and if kept in my pants for a week it won't work at all and needs to have all contacts cleaned.

    Cheers,

    Don

Are you talking about the Motorola Startac? That was a great phone. I had one years ago and dunked it into a toilet...twice. It was made out of black ABS plastic. The only thing that sucked was that antenna. I must've busted 3 or four of them.Is there a similar phone to that with a speaker?--Andy
