Natural light, taller ceilings, and more functional spaces transform this midcentuary-modern home.

and here's some of the details close up.

You'll be seeing this deck in some Wolman PT Lumber ad's ...
Gotta get it all wrapped up ....
then they're gonna send a crew out to stain it ...
then photo for their ads ...
Jeff
Fun stuff..looks great.
When are you gonna put the bridging in?
blue
ps hehehehehe FRAMING ADVICE ALERT!!!! DON'T TAKE ANY FRAMING ADVICE FROM ME. I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT. IF YOU WANT GOOD FRAMING ADVICE, JUST ASK GABE. DON'T ASK ANYONE ELSE....JUST ASK GABE! REMEMBER, I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT FRAMING...I JUST BS ABOUT IT.
END OF ALERT!
glad ya found this one ...
go look at the other thread ... Joe's Job ..
the "entry" shot is the siding that I showed up to help with ...
find the mount blocks ... each one ... siding top and bottom was notched ...
and the door/window trim ....
and the stone cap ...
Lotsa speed squaring going on that day!
Jeff
What's the bridging thingy mean Blue? Do you not install bridging when you frame houses?
Joe Carola
Joe. Your a little behind...you have about 200 posts to read on the springy floor thread.
I'll save you the trouble...I only install them when the code requires it. In Michigan it is only required on 2x12s ....so....I don't automatically install any bridging. I will install it upon special request only.
I also don't use 2x12's for non bearing 2-0 doors....and I've been called a wood butcher for being so brazen!

I'm with ya on the bridging/blocking.
X-braces don't do anything except squeak later.
solid keeps the stuff from rolling ... to an extent.
solid blocking under square edge ... sure ...
but just use t and g and get on with life.
aside from that ... U do butcher wood.
Jeff
Blue,
That must be the thread that's closed. I guess I missed it. I've always installed bridging. I've actually never seen it not on a set of plans before. Strapping on the other hand I don't do nor does any other framer in New Jersey. I framed up in Cape Cod back in 1983 and that's where I learned about it. I don't like it and will never do it unless NJ starts putting it on the plans. There's thousands of houses built without strapping and we have no problems at all.
Joe Carola
Nice azz deck.Who Dares Wins.
I'll let Joe know U all like it.
Looked funny before the bridge was connected ...
just a funny shaped deck sitting way off the back of a house ... crooked / at a weird angle.
BTW .... there's a nice pond/fountain hidden under all those leaves .... they put up a screen to keep all the building scrap outta it ... now it's giving the fishes lotsa shade!
the deck wraps the pond on 3 sides and will have views from the top ... ground level .. and stepped down the hillside.
Still some staits and rail to go in ....
Jeff
Jeff,
That is some nice looking deck. You didn't help frame it?
Joe Carola
nope ...
just showed up all dressed up on picture framing day.
I was still digging my way out of a basement project when all the hard work was done.
Did you like the bridge ...
Joe just laid it out like common rafters ... on 2x12's, I think ...
cut the ridge angle ... nailed them off. The "inside" of the built up "rafters" offsets over that seam ... covering it ... making for one "top" piece with two shorter legs on either side of the curve.
btw .... as per Joe's norm ... the pattern is cut with a trammel and a router ..
then ... the curved final cut ... a circular saw.
as he says ... why do ya think they call them "circular"?
Jeff
Yes I do like the bridge. Can you get a close up of it next time and post the picture?
Joe Carola
not only will I get close ...
I'll get ya some under's too.
Mike ... believe it or not ... but the home owner loves the leaves. To aviod any impending/immediate issues ....Joe's gonna leaf blow the roof and do some major gutter cleaning before we leave ...
get it .. before we ...
ahh forget it.
Jeff
jeff.. nice work.. but joe has a serious leaf problem
spent 4 hours blowing leaves this morning myself.. wanted to make sure i got all my yard work done today so i can watch the stiller / pats game tomorrow ..

The secret to reducing leaf-blower time: No fences. ;)
We had some nice gusts go through today. suddenly I don't have any leaves to take care of.

Cutting curves with a circular saw, I can dig that. Cutting patterns with trammel and router - sure.
But if you are making the finished cuts with a saw why would you go to the trouble of making a pattern? Why not just lay it out on the joist with a trammel and a pencil and then trace the first one on the others?
Enlighten me.
well ...
for one thing ...
U trip less when the trammel is out and off of the garage floor?
actually ... they may have trammel/penciled the lines ... I stopped by briefly one day during the "bridge building" days ... just to bs.
but I'm thinking ... one pattern ... some 1/4 ply ...
just slap it down quick and trace ...
not eating up much time there?
I'll see if I still have a pic of the tightest curve I ever saw Joe cut with a circle saw ...
I know it was tight ... it was my saw he was making make those awful sounds!
Outside radius went just fine ...
inner radius just about killed me. The saw did fine ...
Jeff
I should have one that shows the finished product there ...
ok .. this one's even better .....
Jeff
I cut a 18"R in 1/2" O.S.B. last week. Had to cut 1/4" at a time. Still faster and cleaner than a jigsaw.
However, my boss suggested that I no longer try to cut out arches in 2x12s anymore. He probably wouldn't have said anything but it was a new saw, and now it has a funny noise.
Hey Joe!
did U find your pictures?
here they are ....
Jeff
Ya gotta like a deck that displays imagination other than cut trees.
Tell Joe it looks classy.
Gabe
"Tell Joe it looks classy."
I'm not sure I wanna go that far ... I'd never hear the end of that one.
neither would any waitress ... cocktailwaitress ... or topless dancer in the tri state area!
maybe I'll tell the owner ... it was him and Joe's design.
Jeff
What the heck, what a deck!! I want Joe's deck.......
I hate decks, what's the point of building something you can only use if the weather's nice...that said I love Joe's deck, very nice & comfortable looking...but stick a roof on that sucker, might add three other dimensions<G> Don't worry, we can fix that later!
hey, jeff, what happened with the couple that wanted to put a TV in front of their picture window ?Mike Smith Rhode Island : Design / Build / Repair / Restore
still waiting to hear ....
when I added up the price of the other stuff they wanted ... the main project ...
I thot .... this ain't gonna happen ....
we'll see.
one of the "proposal delivery's" I hate ... and avoid at all costs ...
"Uh ... I'll be out of town ... but I'd really like those numbers ... so just email them to me" ...
fought it tooth and nail ... and lost. So against my better judgement ... emailed the proposal. I don't see how guys just just "drop it off" live?
Jeff
Nice looking deck ya took pictures of Jeff!
Let Joe know that he done good.
I can see why it would be used for an add, looks like the whole place compliments the deck and vise-versa.
Doug
Jeff, that's awesome work. I also admired the siding on the house. Since I'm building a new house right now I'm wondering if you can tell me what it is...is it cement board?
Thanks, Rob
the siding on "Joe's Job" is Hardi siding.
I forget if the trim is 5/4 or 6/4 ...
and there's some 2x mixed in there too.
Jeff
thanks for photos of beautiful deck
great use of a too low side / backyard
