I am building a 1100 sf apartment in my shop for my in-laws. We are adding the joists for the ceiling. I was going to overlap the 2x8s over the walls. I took a trip to Texas and when I got back my father in law had cut all the boards so they would butt together over the walls. I will attach a photo. Is this safe, is this code?? We plan to floor the top and use it for storage. Thanks
Dan

Code is 1 1/2” min bearing, but codes do differ from town to town.
It will be fine. Headers only bear 1 1/2” and often take more load than an individual floor joist. I would install a scab board to tie two sides together and(or) blocking. Your inspector may require this as well. If your inspectors are anything like mine they will tag you on anything less than 1 1/2” of bearing, 1 3/8” will get you tagged.
Thank you for your answer. I think I will do a scab board. Does the scab board need to be a 2x8 also, or will a 2x6 work?
If you really need a scab to carry the load because the bearing area is too short, use the full 2x8, make it long enough, and use enough fasteners.
if you are just want to hold them together, you could even use a mending plate with a few proper nails to hold them together.
If you put the flooring over, it can do the job of holding the edges together, depending on how you lay the floor out and fasten it to the top of the joists. Put the first sheets of plywood where the joint is in the middle and away from the edge of the plywood or other subfloor.
