When we moved a few years ago, the wife chipped this glass on our coffee table. It went to the glass people who trimmed off the damaged part and I promised to make her a new table for it. Time came to pay up.. It’s cherry and black walnut. Made it last weekend and finished it during the week. Nothing special considering the posts from guys like Stan, etc., but I had fun making it.

Very nice. What's the finish?
sealed with a wash coat of clear 2 lb shellac. 3 coats of brushable satin lacquer from Cabot. Wife did not want stain. It really warms up the living room...she was right!!BTW, I think I just read a very good article you wrote in FHB if you are the same Mike Maines???!!!“At its most basic level, capitalism offers people the freedom to choose where they work and what they do … the dignity that comes with profiting from their talent and hard work. … The free-market system also provides the incentives that lead to prosperity -- the incentive to work, to innovate, to save and invest wisely, and to create jobs for others.†-President George W. I see that WAS you talking about the onsite cabinet construction. Very nice article...read it twice so far, and may return to it! It sounded like you were apologizing for using drywall screws to connect the carcases! Not sure why anyone would need to apologize if their work tells the story! Anyway, I loved the bead board ideas, and your thoughts on proportions. Thank you for submitting it!“At its most basic level, capitalism offers people the freedom to choose where they work and what they do … the dignity that comes with profiting from their talent and hard work. … The free-market system also provides the incentives that lead to prosperity -- the incentive to work, to innovate, to save and invest wisely, and to create jobs for others.†-President George W. Thank you, glad you liked the article ;-)
The drywall screw thing goes wayyy back here. Don't know if you've noticed them called Piffin screws. They are not acceptable for structural applications, and there is always a better screw out there. With the reinforcement of the face frames and the finish nails I don't consider the way I used them to be a structural application.
What kind of joinery did you use on your table? I see angled corner blocks, can imagine pocket screws or biscuits for the leg-to-rail joint?
Yes, I did enjoy your article, and will continue to as I re-read it.
I used straight mortice and tenon joints on the leg to rail. I reinforced the connections with the corner blocks as I don't think I used tenons long enough for the design. I used 1/4" splines (1/2 blind to the corner) on the top 45 degree joints so that I felt comfortable with the glass having enough support. Originally, I wanted some form of lattice support under the glass, but I couldn't make it work AND look nice. So I enlarged the lip from my original 1/2" to 1" on the top, used a spline in the joint instead of biscuits. That seems to have worked as the table is very stable. I've had several inquiries from wife's friends so I just ordered some more 4/4 and 5/4 cherry. Always nice to have a working "model" as it were. Thanks for your interest!“At its most basic level, capitalism offers people the freedom to choose where they work and what they do … the dignity that comes with profiting from their talent and hard work. … The free-market system also provides the incentives that lead to prosperity -- the incentive to work, to innovate, to save and invest wisely, and to create jobs for others.†-President George W. Nice! I like the walnut with the cherry. Built a few similar to that. Done both apron, and M&T to the legs. Watch the Windex used to clean the glass getting on the lacquer until it cures for at least a month. If you break that glass, try some dark "smoked" glass. Can't see the spots on the carpet underneath that way. ;-)
Yeah, I know what you mean. But this is a strange one...we had a table with 2 thickness of this, the lower one having some leaded designs. When we moved to PA, the wife messed up and accidently dropped the beveled top at the edge...breaking off the edge. We replaced it for the existing coffee table, but I told her I would build her a coffee table to use the old one we had cut off and finished by a glass supplier. So the purpose of building the table was to actually build around the glass. I was going to put something under, but I didn't want to spend any money on this. I used all "extra" stock in my shop, if you know what I mean!! Thanks, though! We've had enough good feedback, I'm going to build a small matching end table.

DW loves it - but -
Could you put some maple veneer PS strip from Depot over the edge of the corner blocks where the screws are?
Forrest - just sayin'

Excellent work. Anybody that can build "furniture grade" is a hero of mine.
The best reward for a job well done is the opportunity to do another.
Nice work and design balance. Talk about a Conversation piece, you've made it so a person could place a stained and finished sheet of 1/2" thick furniture grade veneer plywood supported on those corner blocks.
Think of all those small collectibles that a "shadow box" style like yours could showcase dust free under that glass!!
Great job,
Bill

Nice idea!! Why didn't I think of that?? That would be too cool, I think. next one......“At its most basic level, capitalism offers people the freedom to choose where they work and what they do … the dignity that comes with profiting from their talent and hard work. … The free-market system also provides the incentives that lead to prosperity -- the incentive to work, to innovate, to save and invest wisely, and to create jobs for others.†-President George W. My son wants to build a table similar to that with a plywood bottom for his girlfriend.
Her family has a cabin near Yankton SD on the Missouri River. The caulk cliffs break off and reveal fossilized bones and shark's teeth.
I can figure The design out myself, but a set of plans would be helpful for his 1st wood working project.
Do you have any plans for that table? If so how can I get a copy of them.
I will help him, but not too much. He needs to figure some of this out on his own.
Rich
I did these pretty much in my head...but I can give you all the measurements...I know what they are!! Will that work?“At its most basic level, capitalism offers people the freedom to choose where they work and what they do … the dignity that comes with profiting from their talent and hard work. … The free-market system also provides the incentives that lead to prosperity -- the incentive to work, to innovate, to save and invest wisely, and to create jobs for others.†-President George W. We have the table 1/2 built.
We worked out the dimensions from tables we have and the anticipated need.
It's all cut out and waiting for us to glue it up.
He is going to put a bottom in it and a hinged glass top.
It's a simple project, but for his first attempt at woodworking on his own it is a good project.
Thank you for taking the time to reply.
Nice table in the pictures. Hopefully we will post finished pictures of the project.

excellent! Can't wait to see it.

Glued up 2 sets of legs last night and the floor is ready.
I dry fit it this morning.
Probably going to glue it up tonight. Then he can start finishing it. Just going to spray it with laquer. No stain. Doug fir will be beautiful on it's own.
Rich
agreed...

That's funny, I just finished a coffee table for myself! Well, the only things I made were the top from a leftover flooring project and the feet. The carcass, drawers, and hardware I just refinished and repurposed from an old card catalog.
Man! Do I know a retired school librarian that would kill for that table and idea!! Well Done!!!
Bill
Thanks Bill...Fun project
