Grant contracted this roof awhile back..they finally got the trusses up and we got started 2 weeks ago.
The weather was good this week, we jammed on a lot. I missed last week with baby being born and a sick van ( it was the fuel pump..440.00$ OUCH).
What we have is this octagon , but like a race track oval, 10/12 and them 18K doors I was talking about…and I have never seen such a sloppy, muddy jobsite in 25 yrs of mucking on sites.
I borrowed the jack idea from Slateman, and modified his design a bit..they really work well, Thanks Walter.
We lose a lot of time on the hips, cutting the angles ( the framers did us NO favors, like being consistant..’nother rant) and the staggered sizes are a challange, we have 9”,10”, 11” and 12” …green, grey and purple. All in all, I think it looks pretty good, I have not hung slate in a LONG time.
Grant..thanks for the hammer..we break a lot less. Oh, and we have plenty of stock to wrap it up.
edit: that is the back of the house, the front is even better looking.

I absolutely love slate roofs! While in Cleveland we had all of the slate removed from our 85 yr. old house. What a mess!! We couldn't afford to reslate, so we settled for something else....I was still cleaning up slate dust a year later!
Beautiful roof......
Ya, we had a lot in PA as well, that was my last time to work on it.
Hope to be done on tues, and may not see it again for yrs.
Thanks...it is pretty to look at.

Hope we don't get the snow they are calling for today. That will cost you at least today, if you work Saturdays. Any who, it will warm up to 35 tomorrow, so all you will have is more mud in Monday <g>. Welcome to another Ohio valley winter/spring, weird huh?
Nice looking work.
What is the underlayment?
Dave
No , not more mud. I am working at my house today, so let'er snow.
The sheathing is OSB w/ Titainium UDL. The framers musta had a real bad day, very few nails actually in the trusses, lotsa hips out of plane, angles off..yuck.

We probably got 4-5 inches of snow, but it mostly melted. Everything's freezing now and it's still snowing so it'll be interesting in the morning. The underlayment is Titanium UDL. Similar to housewrap - can't tear it.Birth, school, work, death.....................

The only place we could order slate from and get the original was from Vermont.....Cha Ching!!!Is slate hard to work with? I know, it's a stupid question......<G>
It came from Vermont.Birth, school, work, death.....................

I thought so......Every roof here in Tucson is tile!!!
Grant,
Too late for you this time--------- but there is a place in Columbus that might have had that slate for you----- save a lot of freight! LOL
I went down a year ago January and bought a little stash of Sea Green and some Purple.
Of course----you might have been bidding against 'em for the install.
they were real nice to deal with.
Stephen
Durable Smurable - They're coming down here out of Cinti. I never bid against them. They just get the jobs without any competitive local bids. I guess homeowners are finding them on the internet and I've got an unlisted office number and don't have time to return a 3rd of the calls I get. Oh, well.Birth, school, work, death.....................http://grantlogan.net/

We get 'em up here also Grant.
A NEW slate roof is rare indeed up here----- so rare that if I notice one---they seem to be doing it.
for repairs I have a place up in Cleveland that stocks used slate and tile
but for new----- or for a color like purple I have gone to Columbus---- they have a LOT there.
If this was Touchy---- forget I said anything. LOL
Stephen
The only thing that bothers me about them being down here is the people they're working for are paying a premium to get them here. There's lot of qualified contractors around, but we're not hearing about the jobs Durable's getting. I've got all the work I need and I'm not really looking for slate work (plus I've got an unlisted office phone number).Birth, school, work, death.....................

gonna put a low-ball offer in on a house with a slate roof ...
needs a bit of patching.
Cath asked if that'd be a problem ..
I said hell no! I been waiting years to teach myself slate repair work!
Looks great.

NICE looking job! Thanks for the kind words.
Looks like a pleasant day when you snapped the pics.
Hope the ankle is on the mend.
It was probably our last nice day for a spell, it was Lunch when I took those, about 45 and sunny. It went up to 50 by QT.
Snowshowers all weekend I think.
Ankle still is acting sorely to certain actions, but for the most part, holding me up. LOL

Hi Sphere, man what a castle. Its been my experience that only the real deal craftsmen are allowed to work on these beauties in the Bluegrass.
The majority of my customers seem to have the mini-mc mansions.
Congrats. on the baby...they are what we work for. stinky
WOW - so, what't that you are building? The searvent's quarters? Any Rolls parked in the driveway?
Super nice work... What do you use to cut the slate for all those hip pieces - they look perfect... mason't wet saw I'm guessing? Another DA Q: where the pieces of slate are nailed in place, do you pre-drill for the nails, or do you somehow punch a hole and then nail?
BTW - is Grant the same as greenCU?
I'll answer. They're using a slate cutter some, but a grinder with a diamond blade mostly. Using the grinder allows the off fall to be used else where and this was some expensive slate. I didn't want to buy anymore than necessary. You punch a hole in the slate with a nail punch, the punch on the slate cutter, or the sharp end of a slate hammer. I am the same as greencu.Birth, school, work, death.....................
http://grantlogan.net/
And for the narrow tops of the hip pcs. we can't dare to punch the holes, I use my Hitachi impact driver with a 3/16 masonry bit, it never really gets to impact mode, but the high speed is faster than any of my drills, and we break far fewer that way.
All in all, it really is nice for a change of work. We both look forward to each day.

CU,
I have only worked on one slate roof.

Do you typically use slate that does not have the nail holes already punched? Our slate was actually from Wales. Also, do you mind sharing what the approximate price per square was for the slate on this job?
Jon Blakemore RappahannockINC.com Fredericksburg, VA
This was a hurry up and wait project. I bought the slate last summer and we were just able to start after New Years. I'd have to look at the invoice (there's three colors and three sizes involved and they all price a little differently), but I think it averaged about $800/sq including shipping. The shipping was nearly half of the total.Birth, school, work, death.....................

It is called a pool house, but from what I gather it is mostly an excercise room with sauna and stuff downstairs. latest figgure I heard is 400K for the works. The HO's don't live there full time, they are in Cincy, OH.

I figured it was a pool house - "servant's quarters" sounded a lot cooler though... :-) Really though, I figure to live like that you would probably have full time help - gardener, maid, nanny, whatever...
Looks good, D. They ought to be happy with that.

The Archy was there yesterday. She had a fit ovr the masons sttone being "too blue"...almost made them tear it down AGAIN. Somehow, they worked it out tho'. She did say that the roof was "fantastic", we weren't worried, we already knew that.
snowing like the dickens here.

Nice job.
I love the look of slate.Nothing in my opinion looks better on a roof.
Next big town over from us Crete Nebraska there is a beautiful old stone 3 story 100 year old mansion .It was getting run down looking .Some antique dealer come in and tore of the slate and put on some 40 year shingles.Just ain't the same house anymore.I am guess it was cost prohibitive to fix it.
Dang it Alice,
You're doing some fine work there.
Very, very, nice.
Mongo
Thank you buddy..we try.
Been hanging gutter for two weeks ( seems like two months) waiting for other subs to get the heck outta our way so we can finish it up.
I did get to work on my first flat seam copper roof last week, real small porch lid...I think once I get a rubber roof under my belt, I'll be qualified to say I have done them all.
I got my first furniture commision since I moved here two yrs ago..a 9' long trestle table...thats a nice thing to do on the bad weather days. I hope to get back to that kind of stuff when I get to senile and crippled up to roof. LOL
Spheramid Enterprises Architectural Woodworks
Seriously...and you know that I'm not that serious that often...except when I'm puuting the squeeze on someone for you...That slate and copper work is "forever" type of stuff. It's genuine, it's friggin gorgeous, and it's better work than I could ever hope to even watch be done. Never mind do it myself.Honest. That's the type of stuff that'll make me pull up a chair and set a spell for. Damn. I love seeing that stuff. Now what the heck? Did I read that you're a new Daddy? You crazy rabbit. Tricks are for kids!I've got a road trip planned this summer, have to take my son back to Frankfort to see where he was born. If you're over in Lexington still doing that fine stuff, the beer (and bourbon, twist my arm) is on me.Gonna go crawl back in my lurk-only cyber-hole...Mongo
Awe shucks..it aint that hard.
I am now a GRAND DADDY bubba, GRAND ..yikes.!
Ok when ya get in town, I'd be happy to show ya the sights and a few awesome roofs that are here in LEX area
As long as Grant lets me keep showing up for work, I'll keep learning!

That slate job is only about a 1/2 mile from the Franklin Co border. You originally a KY native?Birth, school, work, death.....................

awesome stuff you guyshow do you keep your staging up there?
Copper straps nailed above the course of slate. They cut them off flush with the bottom of the slate when they remove the jacks. Hats off to slateman for that tip.Birth, school, work, death.....................

Nope.Grew up in MA, lived in Frankfort from '91 to '93. My sister moved down there after I did, she still lives there.
