I am getting ready to bumpout an 8′ section of my kitchen wall by 2′ to install some cabinets. The design was going well until I ran into a bit of complexity, the house is balloon construction although there is a rim joist for the first floor. Given the span is just over 8′ I will need to use both double jack and king studs on each end. I will be using existing wall studs for the inner most king studs but what would the outer king studs look like? How far up would they extended into the second floor cavity since there is no top plate? Also I was planning to notch them out for the ledger board and then nail them directly to the inner king stud. So the only thing supporting the outer king would be the face nails between the kings and the nailing to the exterior sheathing, currently 1×12+ diagonal boards. Is that correct or is there another alternative?
Couple of other notes….. This will be a flush header using a 3.5×11.25 lvl. I plan to cut the second floor joists and use brackets into the header. The cut second floor studs would either be toe nailed or bracketed into the top of the header. I will be replacing any removed sheathing with 3/4″ plywood.
